Oh No, Joe, Say It’s Not So!

All are invited to join the marketing and communications office us in sending Joe Kuffner off to his next adventure as a graduate student at the University of Oregon, where he will be pursing a degree in digital communications. His farewell party will take place on Friday, September 25, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., at the alumni relations house.

Joe has been an integral part of the marketing team since joining the UP staff in 2009. He has nearly singlehandedly built the UP social media presence, and if you scratch him he bleeds purple (please don’t try).

Faculty or staff who would like to update their headshot photos for the campus directory or other professional uses take note: a professional photographer will be available to take photos for faculty and staff on Friday, September 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon, on the “quiet side” of Bauccio Commons. 2015-2016 Bulletin Updates Due March 16

Faculty and staff members who are tasked with updating their departmental and office information in the 2015-2016 University Bulletin need to submit changes to reviewers by Monday, March 16, according to Tom Greene, provost. The Smartcatalog tool used to update information can be accessed by going to the “Provost” section under the Academics pulldown menu on the main UP webpage. The link is located under “Faculty Resources” at http://tinyurl.com/ad5nzkk (“Smart Catalog (Online Bulletin) Login”) or by using this link. Access is limited to designated users who have been issued usernames and passwords.

Going For Gold (And Silver And Bronze)

The marketing and communications office has received a number of awards from the CounciI for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in its 2014 District 8 competition.

The University’s quarterly Portland Magazine won two gold awards: one for the June 2014 RISE Campaign closing issue, and one for the Winter 2014 editorial essay about the murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Other awards include a gold for “Heroes Among Us: Salute to Heroes” in the Fundraising and Alumni Relations Videos category, by Amy Shelly, Anna Lageson-Kerns, Joe Kuffner, and Rachel Barry-Arquit; a silver award for the Heroes Among Us Gala in the Multimedia for Special Event category, by Joe Kuffner, Jeff Kennel, Anna Lageson-Kerns, and Amy Shelly; silver for the 601 Campaign, including print, video, and social media, for Best Practices in Fundraising – a joint effort between development and marketing; and bronze for the Fashion Photos social media project by Joe Kuffner and Jeff Kennel.

CASE District 8 comprises Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and Nunavut. For more information contact marketing and communications at 7202 or mktg@up.edu.

New Content Management System to Replace Sherpa

The University’s officers have approved a content management system (CMS) replacement project. The new CMS will replace Sherpa, which has powered up.edu for a decade.

Using comments and feedback gathered from many stakeholders at the University, the web team has identified two finalist candidates—OmniUpdate and Cascade Server by Hannon Hill—for the new CMS. Both are used by many colleges and universities nationwide.

Vendors from both companies will be coming to campus to present demo and information sessions about the benefits and features of each CMS.

Superusers and all interested parties are invited to attend the sessions.

Join the UP Shamrock Run Team

All faculty and staff are invited to show their UP pride and help out a great cause by joining the University’s Shamrock Run team. The run/walk takes place on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. Those who join the team will get some great UP gear and will be able to pick up their race packets with official race shirt, race bib, and UP gear, on campus a week before the race.

Registration information for the Shamrock Run can be found here (choose the “team” option; the UP team code is 1070). Race registration closes on Wednesday, January 22.

Last year, the UP team was the 8th largest at the Shamrock Run, consisting of 157 runners and walkers. Because of the great turnout, we were able to raise $785 for the Bill Reed Scholarship Fund. This year, if we have at least 75 members on the UP team, Shamrock Run will donate $5 per person to the University’s Recreation and Wellness Center, which will break ground in May 2014. Portland Magazine, Publications Win CASE Gold

The University’s quarterly Portland Magazine earned the following recognition in the 2014 CASE District VIII Communication Awards competition:

Gold Award: Portland Magazine: The Education Issue, in the category “Magazine Special Issues.”
Gold Award: “The Best Professor in the State of Oregon,” in the category “Writing: Editorial Shorts (published-print or web-editorial pieces, 1,000 words or less)
Silver Award:”The Best Soccer Player in the World,” in the category “Writing: Editorial Shorts (published-print or web-editorial pieces, 1,000 words or less)

In addition, the following awards were announced for other publications by the marketing and communications office:

Gold Award: “Faculty Report: University of Portland,” in the category “Visual Design: Design Improvement (Print or Identity)”
Silver Award: “University of Portland: Campus Experience,” in the category “Visual Design: Multi-Page Print Design”
Bronze Award: “UP: Campus & Academic Experience,” in the category “Alumni and Student Communications: Viewbooks and Prospective Student Publications”

Pilot Navigator Information Needed

As in past years, the marketing office is reaching out to a variety of constituents to help advertise upcoming University events. If your department is hosting an event that occurs between February through June/Summer and meets the parameters listed below, we would like to include it for publication in the Pilot Navigator brochure. If you are not familiar with this publication, please refer to this link for a past issue from Spring 2013.

To help her gather details, please e-mail a short description of the event (approximately 75 words), and a high resolution photo, if applicable, to Melissa Thongtan, marketing and communications, at thongtan@up.edu or Roya Ghorbani-Elizah at ghorbani@up.edu. Please do not provide images taken from websites, as the resolution is not high enough for printed materials (generally photos should be between 250K-1mb). To help ensure that all information can be included, please send event details no later than Thursday, January 2, 2014. Please note that marketing and communications will do their best to accommodate all requests, but occasionally due to event dates and other extenuating circumstances, they are not able to publish every listing.

Suggested parameters for inclusion in Pilot Navigator:

Events must be open to the public as well as university community members.
Space must be able to hold more than 50 people.
Start time must be 5 p.m. or later on weekdays. On weekends there are no time restrictions.
Copy points need title of the event, speaker, lecture name, etc., date, time, location, brief description of the event (no more than 50 words), photo or image if possible (usage will depend on number of photos received and design), contact person at the University (name, phone, e-mail), cost or note that the event is free.
