Residence Life Campus Resource Fair, August 18

August 1, 2014

staff & faculty portraitsThe Office of Residence Life will be hosting a Campus Resource Fair during their hall staff training in August, and all departments are invited to participate. The fair will be held over lunch on Monday, August 18. This is an opportunity to connect RAs to as many departments on campus as possible and to potentially provide them with programming knowledge and ideas, and for RAs to assist in getting each department’s name and work out to our on-campus residents.

If you are interested in having a table at this year’s Campus Resource Fair, please contact Jessica Wode at wodej@up.edu by Wednesday, July 30.

Fall Course Packs Due July 30

August 1, 2014

course packsAll faculty and instructors must turn in their course pack materials for fall semester to the printing services office by July 30, according to Kassie Hansen, printing services. Astute readers will notice that July 30 is a past date; those who have not turned in materials are asked to do so as soon as possible. The lead time is needed so printing services staff can obtain copyright permissions and organize the packs for production before the start of the fall 2014 semester. Some copyright requests take up to six weeks to obtain—please keep this in mind so we are better able to serve your needs prior to the start of school. For more information contact Kassie at 8101 or hansenk@up.edu.

$250,000 Keck Foundation Grant

July 21, 2014

engineering grantThe University of Portland has received a $250,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation to enhance the laboratory experiences of undergraduate students in the Shiley School of Engineering. The grant will allow the Shiley School of Engineering to develop 10 new laboratory modules that support developmental and technical learning objectives.

Engineering professor Heather Dillon is one of several who will be involved in the program. She will focus on the development of the laboratory modules in the area of thermodynamics and heat transfer. In 2007 she received the U.S. Department of Energy of Science Outstanding Mentor Award for her work with undergraduate students.

Engineering professor Tim Doughty will support development of the laboratory modules in the area of systems and dynamics. Doughty has a strong history of undergraduate research and is a co-principal investigator for a current National Science Foundation NOYCE Grant.

Karen Eifler, who specializes in educational assessment and works closely with experts in STEM education, will lead the efforts of education faculty who will work with mechanical engineering faculty. She is the recipient of several teaching awards, including the 2006 Carnegie Foundation’s Oregon Professor the Year award.

Ken Lulay, engineering, will provide department leadership to the project and support the development of laboratory modules in the mechanics area. In the last two years he led the mechanical engineering faculty in development of a “Design Spine” to incorporate elements of engineering design in all four years of the curriculum.

The W. M. Keck Foundation was established in 1954 in Los Angeles by William Myron Keck, founder of The Superior Oil Company. In the area of education, the foundation supports undergraduate programs that promote inventive approaches to instruction and effective involvement of students in research.

Main Entrance Updates

July 21, 2014

hWork is progressing on the University’s main Willamette Boulevard entrance and exit. Over the past weeks much of the new drainage system has gone into the ground on the Shipstad side of the drive. In addition, a bioswale has been excavated and its connections to the main drive have been completed. Over the next three weeks UP community members will start to see much more visible changes to the drive as workers start their concrete work and installation of sidewalks on the Shipstad side.

Beginning July 28 the traffic lane will move from the soccer field side to the Shipstad side, to allow installation and connection of catch basins and concrete pours for curbs and sidewalks.

Artist’s renderings and a work schedule are available at http://tinyurl.com/mygex3z. For more information contact Jim Ravelli, university operations, at 7540 or ravelli@up.edu.

Since then, the Portland Model DEU has been uplifted by national bodies and education experts as an exemplary model for preparing the next generation of nurses. The model has been adapted and implemented in numerous programs nationwide. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Portland Model DEU, the national conference is focusing on the DEU movement into the next decade.

UP Engineering Student Service Learning Trip

July 21, 2014

UP Haiti.JPGLast month, two University of Portland students, one University alumnus, and one staff member from the Shiley School of Engineering traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to help repair medical equipment at a local hospital. The group, all part of the University’s Engineering World Health club, worked and lived in Port-au-Prince for one week.

“We worked on a program called Project Medishare, which is run through University of Miami,” Maldeep Kang ‘14 said. “During our time in Haiti, we helped fix infant incubators, electrosurgical units, patient monitors, suction pumps, and we also organized the warehouse by taking a detailed inventory along with other repairs.”

According to Kang, the group worked 11-hour shifts every day to fix and repair the equipment for Bernard Mevs Hospital. Kang was joined by Shiley School of Engineering seniors Jessica Lazatin and Nate Roddy, as well as staff member Jared Rees.

The University’s chapter of Engineering World Health is open to any student from any major, with around 40 students attending meetings once a month. According to a recent study, UP students spend more than 180,000 hours annually on volunteer and service learning projects.
