Participants can walk around campus anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to take a look at all nine residence halls for their décor and spirit (Lund Family Hall will be in the running this year!) as well as the welcome signs around The Bluff. Faculty and staff will be provided two chips for voting. All votes will be cast at the Pilot House during move in day. The winner will be announced with the other Dorm Competition awards at half-time during the soccer game on Aug. 26.
Email mktg@up.edu if you would like to participate or keep an eye out on Wednesday, Aug. 24 for staffers passing out the voting chips.
A Brand New up.edu
Phase I of the University’s much-anticipated redesigned website launches on Monday, August 1, when some 60 of the University’s highest-traffic sites will debut a brand new look. The web redesign project includes both a new look for the website as well as a new content management system (CMS). The new CMS, Cascade Server, was installed last spring and will ultimately replace Sherpa for all content management on UP’s main website, up.edu. More than 100 superusers have been trained in the new system.
The redesign process included focus groups with representatives from all departments on campus, one-on-one interviews with key stakeholders, and surveys of faculty, staff, students, prospective students, parents, alumni, and donors. The site was designed with a “mobile-first” strategy. Currently about half of the University’s web site traffic comes from mobile devices; numbers are even higher for sites that cater to prospective students.
Phase II of the web redesign includes a new look for the online campus directory and improved individual pages for faculty and staff to personalize with information about their professional experience, interests, and activities. The new directory will launch in October.
Phase III includes the transition of the remaining 40 sites to Cascade Server. They will roll over to the new site throughout the fall.

Retirement Party for John Furey, Jan. 27
A collective gasp spread through the campus at the news of John Furey, marketing and communications, retiring at the end of this month. Renowned around campus and beyond as “Everyone’s best friend,” Furey has long been an essential part of the marketing and communications team. His boisterous laugh, his endless amount of yarns and tall tales, and his unwavering love of both the Pilots and the Beavers will be missed.
Marketing and communications will host a Farewell Furey party in the Terrace Room on Wednesday, January 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. All are welcome to come and wish Furey the very best as he begins this next phase of his epic journey of life.

University Launches New Promotional Campaign
The University of Portland is launching a new set of promotional television spots, with a goal of raising awareness of the University and its mission. Continuing the “Rise” theme from the University’s first-ever promotional campaign in 2010, the spots highlight UP’s excellence in academics; its programs that support leadership, innovation, and ethics; and its commitment – guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross – to educating the hearts, the hands and the mind.
The spots were created by the University’s small in-house team and will be aired locally on KGW, regionally on select NBC programming, and nationally on Portland Pilot athletics broadcasts. They will also be shared on the University’s popular social media outlets so they are available worldwide for all current and former Pilots as well as prospective students and their families.
