Family Open Forum Series Continues with Christina Astorga on Bioethics, March 11

The theology department and the M.A. in pastoral ministry programs continue their partnership with the intercultural community of St. Pius X Parish with their Family Open Forum Series, according to Kathleen McManus, OP, theology. The next forum is a simultaneously translated English and Spanish conversation about bioethics with theology department chair Christina Astorga on Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m., at St. Pius X Community Center (1280 NW Saltzman Rd, Portland). The forums are free and open to all. Previous sessions have engaged theology professor Rene Sanchez and St. Pius pastoral staff on the question of intercultural ministry, and McManus and St. Pius pastor Rev. Sean Weeks on incarnation and Christology.

2016-2017 Bulletin Updates Due March 14

bulletincover.jpgFaculty and staff members who are tasked with updating their departmental and office information in the 2016-2017 University Bulletin need to submit changes to reviewers by Monday, March 14, according to Tom Greene, provost. The Smartcatalog tool used to update information can be accessed by going to the “Provost” section under the Academics pulldown menu on the main UP webpage. The link is located under “Faculty Resources” at http://tinyurl.com/ad5nzkk (“Smart Catalog (Online Bulletin) Login”) or by using this link. Access is limited to designated users who have been issued usernames and passwords.

“The Adding Machine” Opens Feb. 24

comedydramaThe performing and fine arts department will present Elmer Rice’s The Adding Machine from February 24 to 28, at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday) in Mago Hunt Center Theater. A hapless cog in the clockwork of modern business discovers he is about to be replaced by an adding machine. He snaps. Written in 1923, The Adding Machine is a comic yet searing look at technology and its effect on human relationships.

Theology Thursday Lecture, Feb. 25

turnbloom copyThe theology department will introduce its newest faculty member, Dave Turnbloom, as he presents the first two Theology Thursday lectures of the spring 2016 semester. Turnbloom will speak on “The Sacraments: God’s Life in our Lives,” on Thursday, February 25, at 7:30 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120. His lecture is free and open to all. Turnbloom will explore questions about the Sacraments, including:

  • Can bread teach us about God?
  • What does perfumed oil have to do with Jesus?
  • Why do Christians insist on dunking babies in water?

All are invited to come hear about the rituals of Christianity and how the faithful underestimate their power.

Kate Regan Faculty Development Fund for Junior Humanities Faculty: Apply Now

The Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) is pleased to announce that a generous donor has created a grant to support junior faculty in the humanities (English, history, international languages and cultures, performing and fine arts, philosophy, theology) whose teaching and scholarship encompass international and intercultural topics. The donor desires that this grant honor the late Kate Regan, who was a tireless advocate for junior faculty.

Each year, one grant for $10,000 will be awarded to one junior faculty member in the humanities to support an internationally focused research project that contributes to the internationalization of the University of Portland by incorporating international perspectives into teaching or curricular development. The grant may be used as a stipend and to pay for international travel for research or scholarly collaboration with colleagues in other countries beyond the USA. Any portion of the grant used as a stipend will be subject to deduction of fringe benefits.

Application materials, including a letter of support, are due on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. The executive committee of CISGO will review proposals and announce a grant recipient by April 1. The grant must be used in one year, beginning July 1, 2016.

16th Annual Diamond Dinner, With Alan Embree

embree 150 dreamstimeThe University of Portland baseball program is proud to present its 16th annual Diamond Dinner, the official kick-off and premier fundraising event for Pilots baseball. It will be hosted in the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center on Saturday, February 27. The social and silent auction open at 6 p.m., and the dinner and program begin at 6:45 p.m. This year’s guest speaker will be 2004 World Series Champion Alan Embree of the Boston Red Sox (pictured).

Transformation Fridays: Sacrament of Reconciliation During Lent

prayerEvery Friday during Lent the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The Blessed Sacrament will also be exposed for Adoration at that time. All are welcome to come and experience a time of peace, mercy, and reconciliation. Reconciliation will also be offered on Mondays from 9-10 p.m. and Wednesday from 5-5:30 p.m. Confession is also available by appointment with any of the priests on campus.

A special invitation is extended to all who have not been to Confession in a long time. Even if you have forgotten the words and prayers, just come, let the priest know, and he will be happy to lead you through. It is time to experience the great gift of God’s love and mercy.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
