Senior Applications For NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

September 2, 2016

NSF-grantThe National Science Foundation made a significant change to their eligibility guidelines for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program this year, according to Michele Leasor, Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement. Graduate students can apply only once for the grant, as opposed to twice in the past.  The end result is that seniors going to graduate school and planning careers in research should be strongly encouraged to apply.  They will be more competitive than in the past and the senior year will be the only time that they get the practice of completing the application.

Please encourage your bright and high-achieving students who are going into a field funded by NSF to consider applying. Deadlines for 2016:

  • October 24: Geosciences, Life Sciences
  • October 25: Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Engineering, Materials Research
  • October 27: Psychology, Social Sciences, STEM Education and Learning
  • October 28: Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy
  • November 3: All Reference Letters Must Be Submitted by 5 p.m. (ET)

Even though the NSF does not require a University of Portland endorsement, the Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement is more than willing to work with students in the preparation of an application. For more information about the program, visit https://www.nsfgrfp.org/. Contact scholars@up.edu if you have any questions.

Don Galarneau, 1924-2016

August 26, 2016

don-galarneauDon Galarneau ’49, a longtime benefactor and supporter of the University’s mission, passed away on Saturday, August 20. Galarneau graduated from UP with a degree in general science/physics and worked as a field engineer internationally for GE for many years. He gave over $1.5 million dollars over his lifetime (including matching gifts from GE) and was one of UP’s most ardent supporters.

Galarneau was especially generous when it came to supporting the Shiley School of Engineering. He established the Donald T. Galarneau Endowed Scholarship for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, and math majors in 2002; since that time, there have been 25 recipients who have been awarded the scholarship, totaling $56,530.

In addition to the scholarship fund, he made gifts to the Engineering Building Fund for renovation of the Engineering Building; the Galarneau Engineering Student Project Fund; Murdock Challenge Engineering Match Fund; Clark Family Library Renovation Fund (Don funded two study rooms in the library which bear his name); the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering Fund; SAE Society/Galarneau Mini Baja Project Fund/Formula Team; the Science and Engineering Equipment Fund  (Don funded the purchase of a 3D printer in addition to other equipment); Portland Magazine, the School of Engineering general fund; Rev. David T. Tyson, C.S.C. Distinguished Professorships; the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, and more.

Our prayers and condolences to Don’s family and humble thanks for his generosity. For more information contact Sharon Hogan at hogans@up.edu.

First Recipient of Kate Regan Junior Faculty Grant: Blair Woodard

August 26, 2016

U of P

The CISGO Executive Committee has announced Blair Woodard, history, as the first recipient of the Kate Regan Faculty Development Fund for Junior Faculty in the Humanities. Woodard’s proposal is a compelling embodiment of Kate’s vision for supporting junior faculty members in their efforts to internationalize scholarship and teaching at the University of Portland. His research will generate new knowledge that demonstrates how images such as billboards, comics, films, cartoons, and posters have contributed to the development of understanding of Cuban and U.S. foreign relations in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. This important work will also expand the intercultural and international content of classes and potential study abroad options for students at the University of Portland. The $10,000 grant will support Woodard’s research, course development, and travel for a period of one year (July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017).

For more information, contact Eduardo Contreras, studies abroad, at 8266 or contrara@up.edu.
