A Conversation on Why Pronouns Matter, Oct. 2
On Wednesday, October 2, all are invited to bring a lunch and explore the background of why so many syllabi and email signatures include ‘his/him,’ ‘she/her,’ or ‘they/their.’ The Teaching & Learning Collaborative will host a brownbag lunch conversation around the question “Why do pronouns matter?” in the Murphy Room from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The conversation will be facilitated by Alice Gates, social work, who will provide a bit of input and then offer vignettes and dilemmas for further consideration by the group. No universal answers are promised, but a better understanding of why what people choose to call themselves matters may emerge from this session.
Email Karen Eifler (eifler@up.edu) if you have logistical questions about this very informal gathering.

“The Cross and the Crucifix in Visual Art,” Sept. 24
Join Robin Jensen, theology and art history professor at the University of Notre Dame, as she presents “The Cross and the Crucifix in Visual Art through the Ages” on Tuesday, September 24, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. The event is free and open to all.
In this richly illustrated lecture, Jensen will explore how the Holy Cross and Christ’s Passion have been depicted in the history of Christian art. Jensen will also discuss reasons for the late emergence of both the cross and crucifixion in Christian iconography and consider the ways their depictions developed, varied, and were transformed in different places through the centuries.

The Bells They Are A-Ringing
Dundon-Berchtold Hall will be dedicated this week, but a new addition to the family needn’t obscure the birthdays of earlier arrivals and campus siblings. Swindells Hall is also celebrating its birthday this month, dedicated twenty years ago on September 23; and the Bell Tower was dedicated on September 18 ten years ago. To mark the Bell Tower dedication anniversary, the University Museum and Archives provide this post.
