Spirit of Portland U Pennant

August 28, 2020

The University Museum holds vintage spirit or student life memorabilia in the collection and for public display. Wally Pilot items, or the mystery mascot precursor, SPU (Spirit of Portland U) are among the most popular throw-backs. As a new academic year begins, the museum and archives feature this University Pennant from the late 1940s.

Clark Library & University Museum: A Trip Through Our Past

April 3, 2020

The Clark Library has launched a new online exhibit titled “The Digital Museum: Sharing UP’s History.” It presents a selection of items from the University Museum that tell the story of our campus, and the people and activities that have made this a special place. The featured artifacts represent academics, student life, and Catholic history on The Bluff. Take a virtual break and drop by the exhibit at library.up.edu/digitalmuseum. We are grateful to the Covert family for their support in bringing the University Museum online.

A Taste of UP for Friends, Families, Founders

December 6, 2019

From early years—when Archbishop Alexander Christie would come to campus to celebrate his Name Day, i.e., later becoming Founder’s Day—UP has been privileged to share the life and wonders of its campus with friends and families. For a brief retrospective of the recent Junior & Senior Family Weekend, plus news of a picnic under the pines in 1934, follow this link to read a post from the University Archives and Museum.

For more information contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at piatz@up.edu or x8038.

The Bells They Are A-Ringing

September 20, 2019

Dundon-Berchtold Hall will be dedicated this week, but a new addition to the family needn’t obscure the birthdays of earlier arrivals and campus siblings. Swindells Hall is also celebrating its birthday this month, dedicated twenty years ago on September 23; and the Bell Tower was dedicated on September 18 ten years ago.  To mark the Bell Tower dedication anniversary, the University Museum and Archives provide this post.

For more information, contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at x8038 or piatz@up.edu.

Great Fire of 1969: 50 Years Ago This Week

April 12, 2019

April 18, 2019 marks the 50 year anniversary of the University’s Great Fire of ’69, according to museum coordinator Carolyn Connolly. Education Hall, located near the present-day Mago Hunt Center caught fire in the early morning hours and was a total loss, causing the drama, music, and education departments to lose their physical homes on campus along with decades worth of instruments, costumes, the University’s auditorium, and personal and professional documents and items.

To see more about the Great Fire, go to the University museum blog at this link.

Honor and Remembrance at UP

November 10, 2017

The bricks of the Praying Hands Memorial carry the names of UP alumni who lost their lives in war. Each year the University’s Air Force and Army ROTC cadets mark Veterans Day by posting a 24-hour honor guard at the Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial for these and the many alumni and alumnae who have served our country in the military. Perhaps the highest distinction earned by any individual in the University alumni family is the Medal of Honor given to David R. Kingsley, Columbia Prep (1933-1936).

The University Museum and Archives mark Veterans Day with this new entry on our blog. As a complement to the blog entry, there is also a veterans display in the display case on the first floor of Buckley Center near the studies abroad office.

Contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, piatz@up.edu, or x8038, for more information.
