Moreau Center Honored By Catholic Volunteer Network

University of Portland’s Moreau Center for Service & Justice was honored by the Catholic Volunteer Network as one of their “Top Schools for Service.” In honor of National Volunteer Week, the Catholic Volunteer Network put together a list of schools who “demonstrated consistent excellence in collaborating with our network and championing post-grad service among students.” The Moreau Center was honored in the “West & Southwest Region” along with centers from Loyola Marymount University and St. Mary’s University.

The Moreau Center engages students with active learning, mutually beneficial service, and experience-based leadership development rooted in Catholic social teaching. The center, named for Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, offers opportunities for students to engage meaningfully with the community through service, immersions, and advocacy.

Finalists For University Provost: Please Participate in Virtual Forums

University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., has announced the final stages of the search for the next provost. From a field of over 300 interested individuals, the Provost Search Committee has worked diligently to select the following three finalists for the provost position:

  • Herbert A. Medina, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Portland
  • Elizabeth A. Throop, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs at Frostburg State University
  • Brian D. Till, Ph.D., former dean of the College of Business Administration at Marquette University

Due to travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines, in-person interaction with finalists cannot take place. The Search Committee and Fr. Poorman have determined that thetask of selecting UP’s next provost can, and should, continue.

All members of the University community are invited to participate in a series of virtual forums with our finalists using the Zoom platform. During these forums, participants will hear directly from our finalists and will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in dialogue. The following schedule has been established for  community member forums:

  • Monday, May 4 (Elizabeth A. Throop)
    • Forum for Students: 12 PM to 1 PM
    • Forum for Non-Academic Staff: 1:15 PM to 2:15 PM
    • Forum for Faculty and Academic Staff: 4 PM to 5:30 PM
  • Monday, May 11 (Herbert A. Medina)
    • Forum for Students: 12 PM to 1 PM
    • Forum for Non-Academic Staff: 1:15 PM to 2:15 PM
    • Forum for Faculty and Academic Staff: 4 PM to 5:30 PM
  • Thursday, May 14 (Brian D. Till)
    • Forum for Students: 12 PM to 1 PM
    • Forum for Non-Academic Staff: 1:15 PM to 2:15 PM
    • Forum for Faculty and Academic Staff: 4 PM to 5:30 PM

These forums will be recorded for later viewing. Videos of each forum will be posted to the Provost Search Portal (discussed below). In addition to these open forums, each finalist will participate in a series of interviews with smaller groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Finally, the University has created a comprehensive Provost Search Portal on PilotsUP. All students, faculty, and staff have access to the Portal, which contains:

  • Links to the finalists’ CVs;
  • Zoom links for each of the Community Member Forums noted above;
  • A form enabling you to share questions you would like our finalists to answer during their respective forums;
  • The University’s Equal Opportunity Statement, which all are asked to read prior to taking part in forums; and,
  • Finalist Evaluation Forms allowing you to provide feedback on our finalists.

Weekly Webinar for Health Care Providers

The School of Nursing is hosting a weekly webinar for health care providers on the front lines. Each week, we focus on a different self-care topic, method, or conversation. Attendees are directed to watch the 30-minute self-care video on the School of Nursing page before attending. The Health Care Self Care series is an offering from the Schools of Nursing’s Initiative for Vital Practice, whose mission is to explore and implement effective prevention and treatment for burnout and compassion fatigue. Student Leadership Awards For 2019-2020

The third annual Leadership Awards were celebrated online and announced via the Student Activities Instagram account between April 20 and 24 as well as the University of Portland website. Fifteen student leaders and 2 staff members who  exemplified leadership and significantly contributed towards the University’s mission during the 2019 -2020 academic year received awards.

Beacon Staffers Shine Again

The Society of Professional Journalists Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards were announced recently, and UP students journalists were named as winners and finalists in the following categories:

  • Breaking news photography – Jennifer Ng
  • Feature writing – Catherine Cieminski
  • Editorial writing – Dora Totoian, Delaney Vetter and Gabi DiPaulo
  • General news reporting – Madison Pfeifer
  • In-depth reporting – Austin De Dios
  • Online/digital feature videography – Elizabeth Lyons-Best

The Society of Professional Journalists Region 10 comprises Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. First-place winners will compete at the national level among other regional MOE winners from twelve SPJ regions.

Regional winners would normally be recognized at regional conferences, however, all SPJ Regional Conferences have been either canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Regional winners have been notified by email and will receive their award certificates via mail. National winners will be notified in the late spring.

Rec Services Virtual Fitness Program: Stay Active & Engaged!

Recreational Services Virtual Fitness program continues to help our community stay active and engaged during the COVID-19 quarantine. We thank you for your participation in classes!
This is the last week of our Spring 2020 schedule (posted below). Please note: Zumba on Wednesday, April 29 at 6 pm is cancelled.
Our Summer 2020 Virtual Fitness schedule will begin on May 13 and include some new specialty classes!
What is the Virtual Fitness program? 

Each weekday, on MS Teams, two fitness classes are offered at 12:15 pm and either 5 pm or 6 pm, as well as one class on Saturday at 12 pm. Beauchamp’s very own fitness instructors – Lauren, Brady, Brie and Kaitlin – guide students, faculty, and staff through live group workouts. Classes include: yoga, plyometrics, Zumba and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).

  • Thursday: 12:15 pm – Beginners HIIT with Brie. 5 pm – Plyometrics Plus with Lauren

Learning Commons: Finals Week and Newly Certified Tutors

The Learning Commons will operate on a reduced schedule during finals week. Content tutors and the Writing Center’s writing assistants will be available by appointment only on a limited basis. Writing and math tutor schedules are on WCONLINE at https://up.mywconline.net. Tutors in the Natural Sciences Center, Language Studio, Group Work Lab, and Speech and Presentation Lab, as well as our nursing and business tutors, will offer limited tutoring through our email hotlines posted on the Learning Commons website at www.up.edu/learningcommons.

The Learning Commons recently certified 16 tutors at Level 1. The following tutors have completed the Learning Commons’ nationally recognized tutor training and at least 25 hours of active tutoring time:

These students are also among fifty-five tutors and writing assistants who trained in March to shift all Learning Commons tutoring and Writing Center support online in Microsoft Teams. The Learning Commons trains all its content area tutors; the Level 1 training is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program Certification. Multiple research studies conclude that tutor training and program assessment are essential for high-quality tutoring programs and positive student outcomes.
