Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to visit the Garaventa Center’s website at http://wordpress.up.edu/garaventa/, according to Jamie Powell, Garaventa Center. A number of podcasts are available, including the weekly Fractio Verbi podcast. Visitors can link directly to the readings and obtain a written transcript of the spoken reflection. There is also an occasional podcast series called Theodeon, in which Karen Eifler and Fr. Charlie Gordon discuss themes of grace and transcendence they find thanks to their popular Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film series, which applies sacramental worldview to movies now showing in theaters. Campus Services
Laptop Security Service
FBI statistics states that chances of recovering a lost or stolen computer are only 3 percent. UP community members can increase their chances of recovery to over 97 percent by installing the free FrontDoorSoftware, a service provided by the information services division to all students, faculty, and staff by signing up at www.frontdoorsoftware.com/up/. If your computer is stolen, this software allows you to blast a message to the computer that states “THIS COMPUTER IS REPORTED STOLEN”; lock it down remotely; send a text message to the thief; have your laptop yell out for help with a standard message or your own custom message; and use Google Maps to show clues to its location. For more information contact the help desk at 7000 or help@up.edu.
Corrado Hall Museum Display
This week marks fifteen years since the dedication of Corrado Hall on September 23, 1998. It was the first residence hall to be built on the Bluff in thirty years. SAFE Advocates Needed
The health center is seeking faculty and staff who are interested in becoming SAFE (Stop Assault For Everyone) Advocates, according to Kristina Houck, health center. SAFE Advocates are committed, caring faculty and staff members trained to support students who are impacted by interpersonal violence, including stalking, dating violence, sexual assault, and rape. Advocates serve as important resources to students by participating in an on-call rotation as well as being listed on the SAFE Advocate website, allowing students to contact them directly.
Joining the advocate network requires full-time employment by the University of Portland, attendance at a one-time three hour training session, excellent listening skills, and a willingness to be available to students. A training session is scheduled for Thursday, September 26, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the career services conference room in Orrico Hall. If you are interested in becoming a SAFE Advocate or would like more information, please contact Houck at 8125 or houckk@up.edu.

Physical Plant Staff Changes
The physical plant has made some changes in the staff of their carpentry shop, according to director André Hutchinson.
Dave Doe (pictured) has been reassigned so that he can devote his time to special carpentry projects. Evidence of Dave’s considerable talent and craftsmanship can be found throughout campus; recent examples include furniture in many of the dormitory chapels, the Saint John’s Bible display case in the Clark Library, and new podiums for formal university events and ceremonies.
Bret Sorg will move to the carpentry foreman role. He has extensive experience as a finish carpenter and commercial fixture installer, and was introduced to the construction trades by his grandfather, who was a carpenter in Germany.
Brian Tatro has also been hired as a staff carpenter. He joins the team with more than 22 years’ experience as a carpenter and foreman with Todd Construction.
