Plan Now For Exam Proctoring

September 6, 2013

Staff and faculty portraitsThe Office for Students with Disabilities (OSWD), in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences and the professional schools, assists faculty and staff in meeting the accommodation needs of students with disabilities. As the number of students registered with the OSWD continues to grow, faculty are asked to plan ahead now to meet UP’s shared responsibilities to ensure equal access for all. Faculty are reminded that it is their responsibility to proctor exam accommodations for extended time and/or alternative (distraction-reduced) settings. Now is a great time to extend a general invitation to each of your classes for students to discuss their accommodation needs privately with you. Anticipating exam proctoring needs now, including final exams, allows the most effective use of University space and resources. Feel free to set up a faculty proctoring cooperative within your department or school. Be creative and work collaboratively to share proctoring resources. An unmonitored exam room, Franz 123, is set up to meet faculty space needs for proctoring exams.

Thank you for your partnership in creating equal access for every member of our community. For exam proctoring questions or to reserve individual exam seats in FR 123, faculty should contact their school or departmental administrative assistants. For general accommodation questions, contact Melanie Gangle at gangle@up.edu.

Palanca, Please

September 6, 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThirty-six students will be attending the September Encounter with Christ Retreat along with 22 student leaders from September 27-29. All faculty and staff are asked if they would consider writing a note (palanca) to students they know who will be attending. Writing palanca is an opportunity to encourage students and express appreciation for them outside the classroom. Each retreatant will receive an envelope of surprise palanca. Please do not discuss this concept with students, in order to keep it a surprise.

A list of students can be found at www.up.edu/campusministry/palanca. Please submit your palanca to the campus ministry office in the Pilot House or St. Mary’s by Wednesday, September 25. Mark the envelope with “Encounter Retreat—(student’s name).” For more information contact Beth Barsotti, campus ministry, at 7463 or barsotti@up.edu.

Homegrown Teaching Tips

September 6, 2013

1aEifler150The Teaching & Learning Collaborative (TLC) is working to make http://wordpress.up.edu/tl/, its new website, a great first stop for teaching tips and resources, according to Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center. University of Portland professors from every discipline will bring their tried and true strategies to life in short, two- to 10-minute videos. Like what you see? Follow up with a conversation with your colleagues in the Commons or Holy Cross Dining Room, a benefit of using local talent to shed light on teaching dilemmas faced by all faculty. The TL website also features a Technology Teaching Tip of the Week, links to other instructional resources on campus, and downloads of portable ideas such as peer review protocols, writing prompts, and discussion starters for those days when just one new  idea is all it takes to ignite your own teaching imagination. If you have suggestions for new content or ideas for TLC to pursue, please contact Eifler at 8014 or eifler@up.edu.
