TLC From The TLC: Making Memories Stick

October 5, 2018

Now that October has arrived, most courses have had their first exams, according to Zachary Simmons, psychological sciences. As students come in to review their scores, one common refrain echoes through the halls: “I knew that, but I just couldn’t remember it!” Though it might sound like an excuse, the empirical data is clear: human memory is incredibly fallible, even under the best of circumstances. Part of professors’ job as educators, then, is to try and design courses that not only communicate information, but to do so in ways that promote retention.
This week’s TLC blog post explores two methods of addressing this problem: untethered lecture capture (ULC) and whiteboard animation videos.
For more information contact Simmons at x7757 or simmonsz@up.edu.

TLC From The TLC: So What About Boundaries?

April 20, 2018

This week’s post to the Teaching and Learning Collaborative blog concerns a topic not every professor finds comfortable: boundaries, and not the dotted lines you see around countries on a map. Why are boundaries important? Where does your responsibility as a professor begin and end? What are the signs that you need a boundary adjustment? Answers to those questions and more can be found in this article on the TLC blog.

TLC from the TLC: Flipping Your Classroom?

January 20, 2017

staff & faculty portraits

This week’s Teaching and Learning Collaborative article is by Zachary Simmons, psychological sciences. He addresses the idea of “flipped” classrooms, where course content is consumed primarily outside the classroom, with instructional time devoted to application or mastery of the material. “Nothing seems to polarize my students more than their opinion of ‘flipped classrooms,'” he says, and delves more deeply into the topic at this link.

TLC from the TLC: Rethinking How Office Hours Are Kept

November 18, 2016

staff & faculty portraits

This week’s selection from the Teaching and Learning Collaborative comes from Zachary Simmons, psychological sciences. Like many UP professors, he does his best to carve office hours in stone, held invioalate for the good of his students, but life always seems to do its best to wreak havoc on his best laid plans. Sound familiar? If so, be sure to read his piece on exploring the possibility of keeping virtual office hours on days he cannot be on campus at this link.

A reminder: these weekly tips from the Teaching and Learning Collaborative are meant to be taken in during the time it takes to enjoy a cup of coffee or kombucha at your desk. They are also archived at sites.up.edu/tl. If you have a teaching dilemma for which you’d like some insights or resources, please contact TLC coordinator Karen Eifler, eifler@up.edu, or x8014.
