In support of the University’s diversity and inclusion efforts, Tom Greene and Fr. John Donato, C.S.C., have sponsored participation of 20 faculty and staff members at this year’s National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE), the leading and most comprehensive national forum on issues of race and ethnicity in American higher education. The conference focuses on the complex task of creating and sustaining comprehensive institutional change designed to improve racial and ethnic relations on campus and to expand opportunities for educational access and success by culturally diverse, traditionally underrepresented populations. NCORE 2019 is being held in Portland from May 28 to June 1. UP faculty and staff members who attend NCORE will meet after the conference to discuss ways to incorporate ideas from the conference to our campus.

Applications for sabbaticals for the 2020-2021 academic year are due along with faculty development plans to faculty members’ respective deans by June 15, 2019. All materials, including the letter from the dean to the provost, are due to the provost’s office by September 1, 2019. Faculty eligible to apply for a sabbatical must have completed seven years of full-time teaching at the University of Portland, or have completed at a minimum an additional seven years of full-time teaching since a previously funded University of Portland sabbatical.
Faculty and staff members who are tasked with updating their departmental and office information in the 2019-2020 University Bulletin need to submit changes to reviewers by Monday, March 11, according to Elise Moentmann, associate provost. Reviewers are typically associate deans. Reviewers then have until Friday, April 1 (three weeks) to go over the changes and decide to submit them for final approval or send them back for revisions.

Since its inauguration in 2015, the Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research has provided support for faculty members from across the University who collaborate with undergraduates on a semester-long research project. The provost’s office is committed to increasing opportunities for student experiential learning, and this initiative represents a key element in achieving that goal.
Title IX Informational Session for faculty members will take place on Wednesday, February 13, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Theater. Sandy Chung (vice president for human resources and Title IX coordinator for compliance) and Matthew Rygg (associate vice president for student development and Title IX coordinator for education) will be present, as will Tom Greene, provost. Chung and Rygg will provide an overview of the work done this year by the Title IX team, and will respond to questions. Please submit questions in advance using 
As part of ongoing efforts to foster and sustain an inclusive environment for all members of the campus community, UP is participating in the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) Diversity and Equity Campus Climate Survey. The survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete with your anonymous feedback on the campus climate. It is open to students, faculty, and staff in order to gather a representative overview of campus experiences.
