Mid-Semester Feedback Survey Report

An updated report on the Mid-Semester Feedback Survey that was administered to students at the end of September and beginning of October is now available at the IR pilots site for Internal Data and Dashboards. This updated version of the report includes analysis of the quantitative as well as the qualitative data offered by students with regard to their experiences so far this semester. Bulletin Updates Due Monday, March 11

March 8, 2019

Faculty and staff members who are tasked with updating their departmental and office information in the 2019-2020 University Bulletin need to submit changes to reviewers by Monday, March 11, according to Elise Moentmann, associate provost. Reviewers are typically associate deans. Reviewers then have until Friday, April 1 (three weeks) to go over the changes and decide to submit them for final approval or send them back for revisions.

Course changes and descriptions are handled by the registrar’s office; this deadline is for narrative sections of the Bulletin, for example, program descriptions and requirements. The Smartcatalog tool used to update information can be accessed by going to this link. Access is limited to designated users who have been issued usernames and passwords.

Administration Promotions, President’s Leadership Cabinet Appointments Announced

University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., has announced that Andrea Barton, general counsel, and Sandy Chung, associate vice president for human resources and interim title IX coordinator, will be promoted to Vice President and General Counsel, and Vice President for Human Resources, respectively, effective July 1, 2018.

Barton joined the University of Portland in January 2017 as General Counsel and Special Assistant to the President. She oversees all legal matters on behalf of the University and advises the University and members of the campus community in connection with higher education issues.

Chung joined the University of Portland as Director of Human Resources in December 2015. In 2017 she was promoted to Associate Vice President for Human Resources and in May 2018 was named Interim Title IX Coordinator. She has extensive experience in human resources, and is also a member of the California and Oregon State Bars.

There are also four new appointments to the President’s Leadership Cabinet: Rowena Bramlette, who has been promoted to associate vice president for budgeting; Eduardo Contreras, assistant provost and studies abroad; Elise Moentmann, associate provost; and Matthew Rygg, associate vice president for student development.

Moentmann Appointed as Associate Provost

Elise Moentmann, associate dean for students in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been appointed to the position of associate provost, according to Thom Greene, provost. She will oversee all activities related to the development and enforcement of academic regulations, hear all academic appeals, manage the Academic Standing Committee, coordinate the annual development of the University Bulletin, supervise summer school, serve as academic liaison to Early Alert and BITA, manage the course evaluation process, facilitate associate deans’ meetings, and process all adjunct employment contracts among other duties as assigned.  She will supervise the Shepard Academic Resource Center, the provost’s athletic advisor, and facilitate other various standing committees. She will share responsibilities with the provost for core curriculum revitalization, new faculty orientation/academy, and University accreditation.  She will also serve on the President’s Leadership Cabinet and the Provost’s Council.

A transition period from CAS to the Office of the Provost is planned. The appointment is effective July 1, 2018. Please congratulate Elise Moentmann on her new role on campus.

2016 Faculty Awards

moentmann copyThe University’s Faculty Awards were presented on Tuesday, May 3, at the Faculty Awards Dinner, with the following results:

  • The James Culligan Award, established in 1953 in memory of a dedicated servant of the University and presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished service, was presented to Elise Moentmann, history (pictured). Winners of the Culligan Award wear the medal with their academic regalia, as a sign of the University’s highest faculty honor.
  • The Deans’ Award for Faculty Leadership, presented annually to a tenured faculty member who exemplifies, in an extraordinary way, the qualities of teaching and scholarship described in the University’s Articles of Administration for appointment, advancement in rank, and tenure, was presented to Laurie McLary, international languages and cultures.
  • The Outstanding Teaching Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who is a particular exemplar of the University’s commitment to superb teaching, was presented to Hannah Callender, mathematics.
  • The Outstanding Scholarship Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who presents unusually significant and meritorious achievement in professional scholarship during the past two academic years, and whose work substantively enhances the effectiveness of his or her classroom teaching, was presented to Elinor Sullivan, biology.

Pre-show Panel, Social for “Three Sisters,” April 11

wine copyPrior to the Saturday, April 11 performance of Three Sisters by Anton Chekov, all ticket holders are invited to enjoy complimentary wine and cheese while listening to campus experts Candace McLean, theology, Mindi Logan, theater, and Elise Moentmann, history, as they highlight production details and illuminate important themes in the play. The reception begins at 6:30 p.m. in Mago Hunt Center lobby before moving into the recital hall for a panel discussion. Moentmann is associate professor of history and has been a faculty member since August 1998. She has served as history department chair since fall 2009. She has served as director of the Summer Salzburg Session, chair of the Committee on Committees, member of the Academic Senate and the Senate Executive Committee, member of the CAS Curriculum Committee, and faculty advisor to the Phi Alpha Theta National Honors Society in History. Moentmann will succeed Jim Stemler, interim associate dean for students, who returned to his former position from retirement for the 2012-2013 academic year.
