 Lenten Visio Divina, April 17

April 12, 2019

Campus Ministry and the Garaventa Center invite you to join with others for Lenten Visio Divina on Wednesday, April 17, during Holy Week, from 12:35-1 p.m., following noon Mass in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Visio Divina is an ancient form of Christian prayer in which we allow our hearts and imaginations to enter into a sacred image, in silence, to see what God might have to say to us. Our meditation will focus on an illumination from The Saint John’s Bible.

For more information contact the Garaventa Center at x7702 or up.edu/garaventa. (Image credit: Suffering Servant, Donald Jackson, Copyright 2005, The Saint John’s Bible.)

Apply For Sabbaticals by June 15

April 12, 2019

Applications for sabbaticals for the 2020-2021 academic year are due along with faculty development plans to faculty members’ respective deans by June 15, 2019. All materials, including the letter from the dean to the provost, are due to the provost’s office by September 1, 2019. Faculty eligible to apply for a sabbatical must have completed seven years of full-time teaching at the University of Portland, or have completed at a minimum an additional seven years of full-time teaching since a previously funded University of Portland sabbatical.

Sabbatical requests are coordinated with departmental planning as well as the individual faculty member’s annual development plan. With careful planning the academic units have been able to take into consideration the needs of both the individual faculty member and the department or school. Additional information about sabbatical leaves can be found on page 50 of the Faculty Handbook.

For more information contact the provost’s office at 7105 or staten@up.edu.

Thank You, Pilot Family! #PilotsGive A Tremendous Success

April 5, 2019

The development office is happy to report that the Pilot family came together to raise over $1,108,000 for University of Portland students during #PilotsGive 2019. UP alumni, regents, students, faculty, staff, and friends made a total of 2,610 gifts, completing 37 matching challenges during the 24 hours of #PilotsGive. Special gratitude goes out to those who funded the giving challenges. Their leadership motivated the Pilot community to give generously to the causes they care most about.

For #PilotsGive, there were 12 campus campaigns: UP Fund and Scholarships, Clark Library, Moreau Center for Service and Justice, Salzburg and Study Abroad, Campus Ministry, Dundon-Berchtold Hall and programs, Shiley School of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing, Pamplin School of Business, and Athletics. Throughout the 24-hour period, these campaigns connected with thousands of Pilots around the globe to support critical programming for students.  Each of them also competed for bonus funds to support their incredible program offerings—click here to see the winners.

UP is so grateful to all those who campaigned, posted on social media, and made donations during #PilotsGive.  It is our Pilot community that is taking UP to new heights everyday—through their generosity—students are getting the support and resources they need to thrive.

Thank you, Pilots! You did it!

Founders’ Day, April 9: Come Celebrate!

April 5, 2019

The University’s annual Founders’ Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 9, and all UP community members are invited to take part. Founders’ Day is when the University of Portland pauses to celebrate its rich past and its promising future: the past as we honor the bold leaders who dared to dream of a Catholic university overlooking the Willamette River; the future as we learn from our most outstanding seniors whose research as undergraduates portends great things for the future. In recognition of the importance of both the past and the future, the University holds no classes on a Tuesday in April and instead opens its doors to all to learn from our best and brightest students. A schedule of events can be found here.

Founders’ Day was an annual event dating back to the origins of the University. It was revitalized in 2001 as a part of the University’s centennial celebration. It has continued to grow since then and now is kicked off with an awards breakfast for graduating seniors, followed by senior presentations, panel discussions, recitals, and the Scholarship Luncheon, where students who receive financial aid from scholarships meet the benefactors whose generosity helped them attend the University. Classes scheduled to begin after 4 p.m. meet at their regularly scheduled times.

For more information go to the Founders’ Day webpage at this link.

Bluff Brushes with Fame: Buzz Aldrin

April 5, 2019

On July 20, 1969, an estimated 530 million people watched Apollo 11 astronauts take the first steps on the moon. The whole world remembers Neil Armstrong’s small step and giant leap in human achievement. And was there a local connection? Read about UP’s brush with fame in our latest post from the University Museum and Archives.

For more information contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at piatz@up.edu or x8038.
