Portland Fall Classic: Sunday, October 27

Please join the University of Portland rowing team at the Portland Fall Classic Regatta on Sunday, October 27. The schedule is as follows:

Sunday, Oct 27:

8-8:15 a.m.: Meet at the University of Portland’s Boathouse at Vancouver Lake (8612 NW Erwin O Rieger Memorial Highway, Vancouver, WA 98660)

8:15-8:30 a.m.: Tour UP’s boathouse, watch the varsity eights launch, and cheer them on from the dock.

8:45-9 a.m.: Walk or drive from UP’s Boathouse to Vancouver Lake Regional Park. Map available here.

Race Schedule:  (Boats will be racing by the beach to the finish line approximately 8-12′ after start time listed below).

  • 9:06 a.m.:  Varsity 8+
  • 9:06 a.m.:  JV 8+
  • 10:50 a.m.:  V4+
  • 10:51 a.m.:  JV 4+
  • 11:05 a.m.:  Novice 8+
  • 11:10 a.m.:  Novice 4+

11:45 a.m.-noon:

  • Team Gathering
  • Meet back at the UP Boathouse! (8612 NW Erwin O Rieger Memorial Highway, Vancouver, WA 98660).

Come watch the team get hands on their boat and launch from our home away from home, the University of Portland boathouse at Vancouver Lake. Join us between 8:15-8:30 a.m. for a tour of the boathouse, and watch the varsity crews launch for their race.

  • UP’s Boathouse is before the Vancouver Lake Regional Park entrance. The boathouse is in a fenced in area on the right side of the road, just pass the Y in the road. The address is 8612 NW Erwin O Rieger Memorial Highway, Vancouver, WA.

While the UP boats will be racing throughout the morning, coffee and refreshments will be available to all Pilot fans at the team tent from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the beach at Vancouver Lake Regional Park.

2020 Commencement Honorees: Nominations Welcome

The University of Portland invites nominations for the 2020 Commencement speaker(s), Christus Magister Medal recipient, and honorary degree recipients. All nominations should be emailed to greene@up.edu and leadem@up.edu and should contain the following information:

  • Name of nominee.
  • A paragraph or two answering the following questions:
  • If a nominee for Commencement speaker: Why would this nominee be an exceptional Commencement speaker? What sort of message would this nominee deliver to the graduates of the University and their families?
  • If a nominee for Christus Magister Medal: How has this nominee evinced a vigorous spiritual life and an accomplished professional career in service to others? How has this nominee been a source of inspiration and consolation to the world? How has this nominee illustrated and enhanced the mission of the University of Portland?
  • If a nominee for honorary degree: How has this nominee contributed to the University’s values of teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership? What impact has this person had on his/her local community and/or the world? Is this a person that the University would like for its students and faculty to imitate in their own lives?
  • Any contact information for the nominee (if possible).
  • Any connection between the nominee and the University of Portland (if applicable).

The deadline for nominations is Friday, October 25.

Benefits Open Enrollment is Coming Up!

This year’s Open Enrollment will start on Friday, November 1, and run through Friday, November 22, 2019. All benefited employees are required to confirm or change their healthcare benefits during this time. During open enrollment, benefited employees can elect new flex spending amounts, add or change supplemental life insurance, as well as add or drop dependents from healthcare. Any changes made during open enrollment will go into effect January 1, 2020. All forms and plan documents will be posted on the Human Resources websites on November 1.

The Staff and Faculty Wellness Fair will be held on Tuesday, November 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center. Providers will be on hand to answer specific questions regarding benefits. There will also be community partners and internal departments on hand as well. Raffle tickets for a variety of prizes will be given to each employee who visits the Wellness Fair. Make sure to swing by!

Kaiser Permanente Flu Shot Clinics Open Soon

Kaiser Permanente has announced their 2019 walk-in flu shot clinics, which will take place from October 12 through 25, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The flu is a serious virus that can cause severe illness. A flu shot can help protect you against the flu, which is why Kaiser doctors recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu shot every year.

“The Reaction” Featuring Carl DuPont, Oct. 23

In this second performance of the Fr. Claude Pomerleau, C.S.C., Memorial Concert Series, widely celebrated bass-baritone Carl DuPont of the Peabody Conservatory, whose research focuses on transformative inclusion in higher music education, offers a free recital of African-American art song, accompanied by pianist Gregory Thompson. The concert is Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall.

Inaugural Helen Schwarten Foundations of Freedom Lecture, Oct. 24

Please join the political science and global affairs department on Thursday, October 24, at 5 p.m. in the Brian Doyle Lecture Hall (Dundon-Berchtold 004) for the inaugural Helen Schwarten Foundations of Freedom Lecture. The speaker is Michael Munger of Duke University, who will discuss his new book, Is Capitalism Sustainable? (American Institute for Economic Research, 2019).

Munger is professor of political science, economics, and public policy at Duke University, and directs its Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program. He has worked as an economist at the Federal Trade Commission and served as president of the Public Choice Society. He has taught at Dartmouth College, University of Texas-Austin, and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His other books include Tomorrow 3.0: Transaction Costs and the Sharing Economy (Cambridge 2018) and Choosing in Groups with Kevin M. Munger (Cambridge 2015). His research interests include regulation, political institutions, and political economy.

2019 Silent Auction Fundraiser: Donations Welcome!

The annual Silent Auction fundraiser will benefit the Tanzania and Peru Immersions in early December. The Moreau Center needs faculty and staff to help them out. Donations are the backbone to the success of this annual fundraising event. People may donate individually or as a group. We appreciate a wide range of items, from inexpensive to expensive, purchased or handcrafted, gifts of time or services, gently used items in great condition, or gift cards large or small. We request that items be delivered to the Moreau Center for Service & Justice office in St. Mary’s before Thanksgiving. Thank you in advance for your support.

Schoenfeldt Writer Luis Alberto Urrea to Visit, Nov. 7

Author Luis Alberto Urrea joins our campus as the fall 2019 Schoenfeldt Distinguished Writer on Thursday, Nov. 7 in Buckley Center Auditorium at 7pm.  He will also join us from 4-5pm that day in BC 120 for an informal Q&A: bring your questions!  A member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame, Urrea is the critically acclaimed, best-selling author of 17 books, winning numerous awards for his poetry, essays, and fiction (The Hummingbird’s Daughter, The Water Museum, Into the Beautiful North).  The Devil’s Highway, Urrea’s 2004 non-fiction account of a group of Mexican immigrants lost in the Arizona desert, won the Lannan Literary Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His latest novel The House of Broken Angels, set in San Diego, is a tragic-comic meditation by one sprawling family on the borderlands between life and death. He is a distinguished professor of creative writing at the U. of Illinois-Chicago.  The events are free and open to the public.  For details and questions contact English chair Lars Erik Larson at larson@up.edu.

“Pray to Love” with Artist Anne Goetze, Oct. 22

For over 20 years, Anne Goetze traveled to Annecy, France to visit with her aunt, a contemplative nun in the cloistered Monestère de la Visitation. Inspired by this small community of women who dedicate their lives to prayer, she began to document their beauty through photography, which evolved to a series of paintings. Join the artist to hear about her process and challenges, and the film she is creating about her experiences, on Tuesday, October 22, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall 120. The event is free and open to all.

“The Last Days of the Mighty Mekong,” Oct. 24 

Brian Eyler, the Energy, Water, Sustainability Program director for Southeast Asia at The Stimson Center in Washington, DC, will be speaking about his new book, The Last Days of the Mighty Mekong, on Thursday, October 24, at 1 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. His talk will touch on environmental issues, ethnicity, and the history of China and Southeast Asia surrounding the river.
