Sr. Angela Hoffman, chemistry, is conducting research with two high school seniors full time this summer. Theodore (Nguyen) Truong from Gresham High School is sponsored by Saturday Academy’s Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) program, and Vy Le from Madison High School is sponsored by The American Chemical Society’s Project SEED and ASE. There are many more students in the ASE program scattered through Oregon and SW Washington. They will all be coming to campus on Friday, August 16 for a day-long symposium at which they will present their summer project as a poster and as a 15-minute talk. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to come for some or all of the symposium from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “You will be surprised at the high quality of their research and presentations,” promises Sr. Angela. “Saturday Academy is always looking for more mentors, so if anyone is inspired to do so, contact the Saturday Academy office here on campus at 503-200-5858 or www.saturdayacademy.org/ase, or contact me for more information at hoffman@up.edu.” More information is available at this link: http://conta.cc/1dfHc3x.
Campus Services
Stop, Thief!
The University has purchased a new security software protection plan, FrontDoorSoftware, for the entire campus, according to Janice Lundborg, information services. If a device is stolen, the software enables users to lock it down remotely, blast a message to the device that says “This computer is reported stolen,” send text messages to the thief, use Google maps to track the device, and more. It will work on MacBooks, tablets, and laptops, and will soon be usable on Androids and iPads. There is no charge to users; click on http://www.frontdoorsoftware.com/up/ to set it up.

From Our Past
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the surface of the moon, followed closely by Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. The University conferred an honorary doctorate of science on Aldrin at commencement exercises on May 10, 1970. During the course of his visit, Aldrin gave a talk, shook hands, and signed autographs for admirers in Buckley Center Auditorium. A certain star-struck young future upbeat editor, all of ten years old, snuck to the back of the line after meeting Aldrin and getting his autograph so he could shake hands and ogle his idol once again, hoping said idol wouldn’t notice. He noticed.

Melissa Harteloo Photo Show
Melissa Harteloo, development, has a curated show of her photographs, titled “Beyond Paint on a Wall,” displayed at the St. Johns Starbucks from now until July 18. “I’ve recently spent time educating myself about the art and culture of hip hop and exploring all four elements—MC, DJ, B-boy, and, most recently, graffiti artist,” she explains in her artist’s statement. “Graffiti is more than just paint on a wall—it is communication between artists, a language, a story, a legacy—with examples dating back to ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire. It is the way these artists have chosen to convey their feelings about underlying social and political messages. It challenges us to push ourselves outside of our comfort zone and see the world from another perspective. I really want people to understand that there is more to graffiti than kids vandalizing buildings.”
While insisting her pursuit of photography is just a hobby, Harteloo’s artistic talent and dedication are evident when you see her work and take into account her adherence to traditional photographic methods—namely, the use of film rather than digital photography. “I feel pretty strongly that digital photography is actually graphic design, because so much of the ‘art’ is done after the photograph has actually been captured,” she says. Harteloo, a 2006 organizational communication graduate of UP, took her first photography class during her freshman year and spent many hours in the Buckley Center darkroom under the tutelage of performing and fine arts photography instructor Pat Bognar. “She’s great and I tell everyone to take her classes,” says Melissa. “In fact, I took as many of Pat’s photo classes I could.”
Faculty, staff, and Melissa’s many colleagues and friends have until July 18 to see her show. The Starbucks is located at 8539 N. Lombard Street in the heart of downtown St. Johns.
