Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering Symposium: August 16

August 2, 2019

All University community members are invited t0 attend the Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) Symposium at the University of Portland on Friday August 16, 2019. The symposium is the culminating learning event of the ASE program, where this year’s 110 high school interns from over 30 mentoring organizations will share their individual summer projects and experiences through poster sessions and oral presentations. This event is free and open to the public.

Saturday Academy has served the Portland area for 36 years as a nonprofit. We offer more classes and summer camps for children in grades 2–12 in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math classes—integrated with the arts—than anyone else. Our instructors teach at more than 20 locations across the Portland metro area. These hands-on experiences provide opportunities for deep learning and knowledge sharing by experts in the field. We believe all students deserve a chance to explore their curiosity! Financial aid is available, and the application process is quick and confidential.

Science & Engineering Symposium

ASE1Sr. Angela Hoffman, chemistry, is conducting research with two high school seniors full time this summer. Theodore (Nguyen) Truong from Gresham High School is sponsored by Saturday Academy’s Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) program, and Vy Le from Madison High School is sponsored by The American Chemical Society’s Project SEED and ASE. There are many more students in the ASE program scattered through Oregon and SW Washington. They will all be coming to campus on Friday, August 16 for a day-long symposium at which they will present their summer project as a poster and as a 15-minute talk. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to come for some or all of the symposium from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “You will be surprised at the high quality of their research and presentations,” promises Sr. Angela. “Saturday Academy is always looking for more mentors, so if anyone is inspired to do so, contact the Saturday Academy office here on campus at 503-200-5858 or www.saturdayacademy.org/ase, or contact me for more information at hoffman@up.edu.” More information is available at this link: http://conta.cc/1dfHc3x.

Saturday Academy Special Offer

Saturday Academy is an educational non-profit affiliated with the University of Portland that offers a wide variety of classes and camps for students in grades 2-12. This summer Saturday Academy is once again extending an offer to University staff and faculty to take 20 percent off any class. Classes are offered on the University of Portland campus, as well as many other locations throughout the city. Class options include: Engineering Academy, Stop Motion Claymation, Animal Anatomy, Website Design, Chemistry Lab, Creative Writing and many others. Classes are taught by experts and professionals that work in their respective fields. View all classes at www.saturdayacademy.org. Dave Houglum, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed a six-year commitment on the Board of Directors for the Maybelle Center for Community, with two of those years serving as the Executive Board Secretary. Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C. (former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Portland from 1978-1991), the Maybelle Center disrupts social isolation so we can all experience a healthy, connected life and contribute to a thriving Portland.
