Faculty members who wish to spread their nine-month pay over twelve months need to fill out a form in the payroll office in order to do so. The deadline for payroll to receive the forms is Monday, September 16, 2013. Those who have previously signed up for the twelve month option will continue to be paid on that basis until the payroll office receives a written authorization to stop the plan. Those who miss the September deadline will have to wait until the following fall to make the change. The twelve month payments begin in September 2013 and end in August 2014. If you have any questions please call Debbie Schwartzkopf, payroll, at 8338 or schwartz@up.edu.
Campus Services
Administrative Changes
Jim Lyons, vice president of University relations, has announced his resignation. Jim and his family will be relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area where Jim will assume the role of vice president for university relations at Santa Clara University beginning in October.
Jim has served with distinction on the Bluff since 1998 when he began his service here as dean of admissions. During the years Jim led admissions, applications more than tripled and, as a result, the quantity and quality of each incoming freshman class has risen. In 2005, Jim was appointed senior associate vice president of University relations and in 2008, he was named vice president. In this capacity Jim has been responsible for the Offices of Alumni Relations, University Events, Marketing & Communications, and Development, including the University’s $175 million Rise Campaign, the most significant fundraising campaign in the University’s 111-year history. To date more than $162 million has been raised. In addition, through his guidance and leadership in the marketing arena, the profile of the University has never been higher. Jim was the recipient of the Miltner Award, the University’s most prestigious staff award, in 2006. Jim has also been very active in the community through board leadership for Seton Catholic High School, Catholic Charities of Oregon, and Saturday Academy as well as service on Our Lady of Lourdes Finance Council and volunteer youth coaching with Catholic Youth Organization.
Jim and his wife, Connie, and their four sons have added much to the fabric of the UP community.
Fr. Beauchamp has appointed Laurie Kelley, currently associate vice president of University relations and chief marketing officer, to serve as interim vice president of University relations upon Jim’s departure. Laurie has served here on The Bluff since October 2006. Laurie and her team have shepherded the UP brand to new heights. In addition to marketing, Laurie has directed many of the University’s signature events including Focus the Nation, the Rise Campaign launch, the State of UP, the Pamplin School of Business’ 75th Anniversary, the School of Nursing’s 75th Anniversary and last year’s Rise for Scholarships Event, which raised over $1.3 million for scholarships. In her new position, Kelley will oversee the Offices of Alumni Relations, Development, Marketing & Communications, and University Events. Prior to coming to UP, she was the vice president of marketing & planning at Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).
Laurie and her husband Mike have four children. She has served on the boards of directors of the Blanchet House, Children’s Cancer Association and served as a national commissioner for CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education). She currently serves on the board of Jesuit High School and Notre Dame Women Connect. She holds an undergraduate degree in accounting and an MBA, both from the University of Notre Dame.
Please congratulate Laurie on her new position and thank Jim Lyons for his years of dedication and service to the University of Portland. For more information contact the president’s office at 7101 or simek@up.edu.

2013 Bike Commute Challenge
Every September, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance sponsors a Bike Commute Challenge for Portland area businesses and organizations, according to Pat Ell, Moreau Center. They challenge groups (schools, business, departments) to commute by bike for the month of September. Ell would like to challenge all other UP departments and offices to take part in this year’s Bike Commute Challenge. “Even though it may be impossible for any other offices to top the incredible stats put up by the Moreau Center,” says Ell, “I encourage you to challenge your coworkers to commute by bike – it is more healthy, more fun, and more environmentally sustainable than commuting by automobile.”
More information is available at http://tinyurl.com/ot8qv6c. When people log in, they will find a tool to log miles, which also estimates the CO2 that a bicyclist has not contributed to the atmosphere. For more information contact Ell at 7132 or ell@up.edu.
Green Dots Prevent Violence
The University’s violence prevention strategy, Green Dot, reminds all of us that we have the power to prevent violence through taking action and intervening in situations that have the potential to cause harm, according to Kristina Houck, health center. During last week’s Orientation, incoming freshmen were invited to join in defining violence prevention as a community responsibility, ensuring that fewer people are affected by violence at UP.
The Green Dot Team thanks all faculty, staff and administrators who have joined us in conveying to the entire community that we are all committed to doing our part to prevent violence. If you haven’t yet, please consider displaying a poster in your office, including a statement of support in your e-mail signature line, adding a message about preventing violence to your syllabus or student worker materials, or simply adding a green dot to PowerPoint slides used in presentations.
To assist you in demonstrating your commitment to preventing violence, the team has created a Green Dot media kit with suggestions and materials for your use. It is available for download at www.up.edu/greendot on the ‘What Can I Do?’ page alongside the faculty and staff tool kit. If you need of a poster for your office, please e-mail Houck at houckk@up.edu.
New Garaventa Center Location
The Garaventa Center is now located in the Corrado Room on the third floor of Franz Hall, according to program coordinator Jamie Powell. The larger space will be used for pre-event receptions, smaller talks or workshops, and to invite faculty and staff to “Thirst Fridays” each semester, meant to serve as joyful and festive events with a goal of encouraging camaraderie across departments and schools on campus. The Garaventa Center will build on relationships it has established on campus over the last eight years that engage students, faculty and staff in conversations in the Catholic intellectual tradition while forming new working relationships that continue to foster study, reflection and an ongoing exchange about faith and culture. For more information contact Powell at 7702 or powell@up.edu.

Title IX Changes, Information
Kristina Houck has been appointed as Title IX deputy director for training and education, according to Title IX coordinator Elayne Shapiro, communication studies. She also serves as wellness education and prevention program coordinator for the University.
Please note that the Early Alert form, available on both the Early Alert and Title IX page, now requests a brief summary, as well as source of the information (i.e. victim, witness, 3rd party or anonymous). Mandated reporting requires a completed report even if the information is second-hand. This is a modification to information that personnel may have received last year through Title IX training. From this point forward, please be sure to complete a report to Title IX for any incident of sexual harassment, stalking, dating violence, sexual assault, or sexual discrimination you are made aware of; whether it be a report from a victim, a witness, a third party, or something of which you are personally aware.
Please note that Title IX can provide accommodations for victims, including a change in class schedule, alternative housing options, counseling, and assisting the victim in feeling safe and able to fully participate in campus activities.
For more information contact Shapiro at 7349 or shapiro@up.edu.
