2015 Retiring Faculty Slideshow

A slideshow of the honored retirees can be found at this link. To complement the WordPress post, the museum also has a photograph display of the retiring faculty in the display case on the first floor of Buckley Center across from the Shepard Freshman Resources Center.

Retiring Faculty Ceremony & Reception, April 24

hThe following faculty members have announced their retirement at the conclusion of the spring 2015 semester, according to Kathleen Staten, provost’s office:

2014 Faculty Awards

tam copyThe University’s 2014 Faculty Awards were presented on Tuesday, May 6, at the Faculty Awards Dinner, with the following results:

  • The James Culligan Award, established in 1953 in memory of a dedicated servant of the University and presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished service, was presented to Karen Eifler, co-director of the Garaventa Center and School of Education professor extraordinaire. Winners of the Culligan Award wear the medal with their academic regalia, as a sign of the University’s highest faculty honor.
  • The Deans’ Award for Faculty Leadership, presented annually to a tenured faculty member who exemplifies, in an extraordinary way, the qualities of teaching and scholarship described in the University’s Articles of Administration for appointment, advancement in rank, and tenure, was presented to Elayne Shapiro, communication studies.
  • The Outstanding Teaching Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who is a particular exemplar of the University’s commitment to superb teaching, was presented to Trudie Booth, international languages and cultures, to wild applause, of course.
  • The Outstanding Scholarship Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who presents unusually significant and meritorious achievement in professional scholarship during the past two academic years, and whose work substantively enhances the effectiveness of his or her classroom teaching, was presented to Matthew Warshawsky, international languages and cultures.

Title IX Changes, Information

U of PKristina Houck has been appointed as Title IX deputy director for training and education, according to Title IX coordinator Elayne Shapiro, communication studies. She also serves as wellness education and prevention program coordinator for the University.

Please note that the Early Alert form, available on both the Early Alert and Title IX page, now requests a brief summary, as well as source of the information (i.e. victim, witness, 3rd party or anonymous). Mandated reporting requires a completed report even if the information is second-hand. This is a modification to information that personnel may have received last year through Title IX training. From this point forward, please be sure to complete a report to Title IX for any incident of sexual harassment, stalking, dating violence, sexual assault, or sexual discrimination you are made aware of; whether it be a report from a victim, a witness, a third party, or something of which you are personally aware.

Please note that Title IX can provide accommodations for victims, including a change in class schedule, alternative housing options, counseling, and assisting the victim in feeling safe and able to fully participate in campus activities.

Peer Review Strategies Workshop

The Writing Resource Center and Teaching and Learning Collaborative invite all faculty to a workshop, “Using Peer Review Strategies to Improve Student Writing and Learning,” on Wednesday, April 17, from 4-5 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 319, according to Karen Eifler, education. This will be a hands-on session, with input from panelists Lars Larson, Elayne Shapiro, Lisa Reed, and Karen Eifler, and time for questions, discussion, and practice. Elayne Shapiro Lecture

Elayne ShapiroElayne Shapiro, communication studies, will present “Conflict in the Bible: the Communication-Conflict Lens” as part of the Spring 2013 Communication Studies Colloquium Series on Wednesday, February 27, noon to 1 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. Her talk is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.

In addition to her teaching and administrative duties, Shapiro conducts research in computer-mediated communication and health communication. Her research appears in several book chapters, the Journal of the Northwest Communication Association, the Journal of American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the Journal of College Teaching, and the Journal of Religious Education. Orbis Press recently published Reading the Bible: Transforming Conflict, coauthored with Sr. Carol Dempsey, theology.

Dave Houglum, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed a six-year commitment on the Board of Directors for the Maybelle Center for Community, with two of those years serving as the Executive Board Secretary. Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C. (former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Portland from 1978-1991), the Maybelle Center disrupts social isolation so we can all experience a healthy, connected life and contribute to a thriving Portland.
