The second annual Summer Research Celebration will occur on Tuesday, November 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Franz Hall lobby. All are welcome to come see the amazing research opportunities many students had this past summer, both at UP and all across the nation and world. Students will be presenting posters of their work and will be available to answer questions about their research.

Faculty are asked to encourage their students who had on- or off-campus research experiences to apply to participate. The application is available at this link. The deadline to apply is Friday, October 9.

Data obtained through the portal will be used to populate A Community of Scholars, published by the provost’s office. That data will also be used for the Clark Library’s annual celebration of UP authors. Faculty members will send the data to their respective deans as a part of annual self-evaluation, and they can also use it to develop their personal curriculum vitae.

Scholarly Activity Portal Always Ready For Faculty Input

books-20747367-copyThe scholarly activity portal is always ready for faculty input on PilotsUP under the “Academics” tab. Faculty members are encouraged to update their scholarly activity as it occurs; the portal offers a one-stop opportunity to update recent activity.  The data obtained via the portal are used to populate A Community of Scholars, published annually by the provost’s office. That data are also used for the Clark Library’s annual celebration of UP authors.

Faculty members will download the report for their school and send the PDF copy of the report to their respective deans as a part of the annual self-evaluation, and they can also use the data entered to develop their personal curriculum vitae.

Founders’ Day Reminder: Data Entry Deadline Is March 16

Founders’ Day, April 14

West HallThe University’s annual Founders’ Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 14. Four sessions of student presentations will be held in place of regularly scheduled classes, and all students and faculty are encouraged to take part in the day’s events, featuring senior presentations, undergraduate research, panel discussions, recitals, and more. Faculty who have questions about the Founder’ Day schedule and how to submit student presenters’ data for the schedule can speak to their school’s liaison (listed below) or contact Michele Leasor, program director, at 8264 or leasor@up.edu.

New Institutional Review Board Review Request Deadlines

FIdiscussionGroupAll Institutional Review Board (IRB) requests for review should be submitted to irb@up.edu, according to Michele Leasor, assistant to the provost’s office. Requests should no longer be sent directly to the faculty member in your department.

This fall the IRB Committee is piloting a new deadline and response schedule. The Spring 2015 schedule will be published on www.up.edu/irb by late November. Requests for exceptions to the published schedule must be approved and forwarded by your dean. The deadline for the October 8 meeting has passed. The deadline for proposals for the November 12 meeting will be October 29; a response will be sent by November 19. Proposals for the December 12 IRB meeting are due by November 26; responses will be sent by December 19. For more information contact Leasor at 8264 or leasor@up.edu.

Recognizing Student Off-Campus Research

Orr copyAll faculty members who wrote a letter of recommendation for a student to pursue off-campus research this past summer are asked to please send the student’s name to John Orr (orr@up.edu). The provost’s office is preparing a document, similar to A Community of Scholars, about students; documenting the on-campus experiences is fairly easy, but they are now trying to collect information about students’ an off-campus experiences. Orr’s office can follow up with students for more details about their experience and simply need to know who applied. UP students are doing amazing things, and they should be recognized for their efforts.

A Community of Scholars

Comm ScholarsThank you to the faculty members who provided feedback to improve the Scholarly Activity Pilots portal after using it to provide information for the Community of Scholars report last year. Please continue to use this tool to report information for the 2013-2014 Community of Scholars report.

Faculty should start loading scholarly activity for the past academic year as soon as possible in order to see their information appear in the fall report. Data will be sent to the marketing and communications office on Saturday, June 14, so please load materials before then.

Faculty members will find their personal, secure access to the portal on PilotsUP (https://pilots.up.edu) under the “Academic” tab. Hover over the Academic tab with your mouse and then click on “Scholarly Activity.” Instructions on how to use the portal appear in the left side bar. Faculty members will send a report from their portal to their respective deans as a part of the annual self-evaluation, and they can also use the data entered to develop their personal curriculum vitae. New features include the ability to send a notice about a presentation or publication directly to upbeat, as well as numerous other changes, most suggested by faculty members who used the portal last year.

New Grant, FirstUP Planning

Holly Sweeney Photo.JPGThe University of Portland has received a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and Oregon Campus Compact to host an AmeriCorps VISTA member who will help the University develop resources and build capacity to better serve first-generation college students, according to Michele Leasor, honors program. Holly Sweeney, pictured, will be joining the UP community for this one-year AmeriCorps VISTA appointment beginning August 31.

In fall 2012, the University of Portland hosted FirstUP, a welcome event for first-generation college students. FirstUP was a cooperative effort between the academic and student affairs divisions. One aspect that made FirstUP 2012 a great success was the support of faculty and staff who were themselves first-generation college students. All first-generation college students who would be willing to have the planning group contact them with opportunities to be involved with this year’s efforts are asked to contact Leasor at 8264 or leasor@up.edu.

The FirstUP Planning Committee would like to thank the Division of Student Affairs, Office of the Provost, and Office of the Executive Vice President, who collaborated to provide the matching funds required for the AmeriCorps VISTA grant.
