“Scenes and Revelations” Opens Oct. 1, Hunt Center Theater

scenesThe performing and fine arts department presents Elan Garonzik’s “Scenes and Revelations,” with performances on Wednesday, October 1 through Sunday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday), in Mago Hunt Center Theater. In 1894, at the height of America’s westward movement, four Pennsylvania sisters must decide whether to forge ahead or to move in the opposite direction as they are haunted by their pasts and face uncertain futures. Faculty and staff can use season passes to reserve complimentary tickets, and students can reserve free tickets for the Wednesday or Thursday shows. Contact the Hunt Center box office at 7287 to reserve your seats, or visit the box office in the Hunt Center lobby from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Pre-Show Reception and Panel for “Scenes and Revelations”

Welcome Tyler Zimmerman

staff & faculty portraitsTyler Zimmerman has joined the student activities team as weekend and late night programming coordinator, according to Jeromy Koffler, student activities. He will primarily work to support Pilots After Dark, the Campus Program Board, and Pilot Audio and Lighting. Many faculty and staff may recognize Zimmerman through his role as assistant director of Christie Hall, and as an active participant of Moreau Center immersion programs. Tyler is currently studying for his master of arts in communication studies here at the University as well as serving as an intern for the National Association of Campus Activities, where he is working to increase conference engagement through the use of social media. Please join in welcoming Tyler to his new role.

MAT Informational, Oct. 6

MATFaculty, staff, and students are invited to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Informational on Monday, October 6, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy Room (room 426). The MAT is an intensive program designed to prepare individuals with baccalaureate degrees for teaching in K-12 schools. MAT graduates earn a masters degree and are eligible for Oregon initial licensure at two contiguous levels of authorization: early childhood, elementary, middle and/or high school. New Institutional Review Board Review Request Deadlines

FIdiscussionGroupAll Institutional Review Board (IRB) requests for review should be submitted to irb@up.edu, according to Michele Leasor, assistant to the provost’s office. Requests should no longer be sent directly to the faculty member in your department.

This fall the IRB Committee is piloting a new deadline and response schedule. The Spring 2015 schedule will be published on www.up.edu/irb by late November. Requests for exceptions to the published schedule must be approved and forwarded by your dean. The deadline for the October 8 meeting has passed. The deadline for proposals for the November 12 meeting will be October 29; a response will be sent by November 19. Proposals for the December 12 IRB meeting are due by November 26; responses will be sent by December 19. For more information contact Leasor at 8264 or leasor@up.edu.

Come See The Crab Lab, Oct. 3

1aCrabLab150All students, staff, faculty, and friends are invited to visit the Crab Lab during its open house on Friday, October 3, from noon to 5 p.m., in Swindells 139 and 128, according to Tara Maginnis, biology. With over 500 gallons of saltwater and six species of crabs, there is plenty to explore. Maginnis and her biology research students will be there explaining how the lab works and what kind of research goes on there (and no, they don’t eat the crabs and neither can you).

University Singers, Women’s Chorale Concert, Oct. 4

1aSingers150The University Singers and Women’s Chorale will open their new concert season on Saturday, October 4, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. The University welcomes Kathryn Briggs as the new director of the Women’s Chorale with this all-choral program featuring American music, including works by Stephen Paulus, Portland’s own Joan Szymko, and honorary University of Portland alumnus Aaron Copland. Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
