Faculty, Staff Invited To Reunion Weekend, June 26-29

June 23, 2014

REUNION LOGO copyFaculty and staff members are encouraged to join the hundreds of alumni who return to campus to participate in the annual Alumni Reunion. A special registration form for faculty and staff is available online, and those who would like to attend are asked to fill out the form as soon as possible. Reunion will take place on campus June 26-39. The faculty/staff registration form is available at http://tinyurl.com/lzsdzma. Most events are free for faculty and staff, as indicated on the registration form. The following events are not free and require payment: Farm to Fork dinner, Alumni Golf Tournament, and the Mount St. Helens bus tour. To register for these paid events, please contact the alumni office directly.

Reunion is the largest alumni event of the year, annually drawing more than a thousand alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to campus for a weekend of reconnection and reminiscing. This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Salzburg Study Abroad Program, as well as the milestone classes of 1964 and 1989. A Farm to Fork dinner kicks off the weekend’s festivities on Thursday night, followed by Friday’s National Alumni Board Golf Tournament, a bus tour with professors Bob Butler and Steve Kolmes to Mount St. Helens, the Bierstube on The Bluff welcoming reception, and the Late Night Gasthaus Talent Pub and Euro-Discotheque. Saturday features the Old Stomping Grounds 5K run, the 50 Year Club Mass and Lunch, a Men’s Basketball Alumni game, River Campus tours, a bike tour of North Portland, a story session with Brian Doyle, receptions for the classes observing quinquennial anniversaries, and the signature event of the weekend, the Welcome Home BBQ and Dance. The weekend concludes on Sunday with the All-Alumni Mass and Brunch.

For more information contact the alumni office at 7328 or alumni@up.edu.

Network Expansion to 1.5Gbps Complete

June 9, 2014

Tablet - Happy woman holding digital tablet dreamstime_m_27971475.jpgThe final stages of the campus network bandwidth expansion to 1.5Gbps were completed on Thursday, June 5, according to Michelle Sunderland, information services. Over the course of the past five months the IS infrastructure team has taken campus bandwidth from 320Mbps to 1.5Gbps, an increase by 4.6 times. The upgrade included transitioning service providers by bringing TW Telecom and Comcast to the campus. Having two carriers with unique routes to the UP campus provides redundant service in the case of a service outage.

We are excited about the resulting performance and reliability improvements this upgrade will bring to the campus network. This past year users experienced many challenges streaming video content and getting reliable and high speed results when using Google. The IS infrastructure team has completed the initial validation of the new network and reports that video streaming and performance issues have been addressed.

If users experience any issues with network performance they are encouraged to reach out to the help desk at 7000 or help@up.edu to report them.

“Iolanthe” Plays Through June 28

June 9, 2014

iolantheMock’s Crest Productions will present Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday from June 6 to June 28, at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m Sundays), in Mago Hunt Center Theater. Tickets are available through the Hunt Center box office at 7287 or magohuntboxoffice@up.edu.

This year’s production promises an evening of fairies, love, and politics set in the mod-swinging early 1960s of London’s SoHo District, an all-new setting for Gilbert and Sullivan’s “fairy” comedic opera, which satirizes the House of Peers and the English political system. Iolanthe revolves around the love of Strephon, who is half a mortal and half a fairy, and Phyllis, a lovely shepherdess, who is a ward of the Lord Chancellor of England. Strephon’s mother, Iolanthe, is a fairy and favorite of the Queen of the Fairies but has been banished because of her relationship with a mortal. Strephon and Phyllis want to get married but her request is refused by the Lord Chancellor and the peers, both because Strephon’s reputable “fairyness” and because they all want to marry Phyllis. When Phyllis sees Strephon speaking with his immortal and never-aging mother, she believes him to be unfaithful and sides with the peers. Will the House of Parliament and the Lord Chancellor allow the lovers to reconcile? Or will laws get in the way between Phyllis and Strephon?

Summer Construction Projects, Detours

June 2, 2014

hConstruction on both the main Willamette Blvd. entrance and the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center will be causing traffic detours and pedestrian access route changes this summer.

The recreation center fencing is up and delineates accessible sidewalks skirting the construction site. Access to and from University Village will be on the SW side of Strong Street and the NE side of Warren street. Parking will be open around the construction site on both Strong and Warren, but eliminated on Van Houten between Strong and Warren. Please be cautious and reduce speed to 20 MPH on Portsmouth in front of the recreation center site due to truck traffic on an offsite. The construction will extend through the 2014/2015 academic year and be complete in June 2015. These traffic measures will be in place for the duration of the project.

Main entrance construction will commence the week of June 1 and will be complete in late August. Traffic will be reduced to campus entry only, with traffic exiting through the main lot and Portsmouth or via the Kenna exit to Willamette. Pedestrian access will be on the NW side of the main entry or SE side of Shipstad. The main entrance will be open to incoming traffic at all times. Drive carefully when encountering possible gravel road conditions, and please keep speed to 10-15 MPH through the area. Sidewalk and road closure signs will be set up to guide drivers. A map is available on the Facilities Planning and Construction page at www.up.edu/facilitiesplanning.

Please have patience with the inevitable construction issues. Everyone’s safety is our priority. If you have questions  call facilities planning and construction at 8874.

Holy Cross Jubilee Celebrations

June 2, 2014

belinsky copyThe list of Congregation of Holy Cross priests celebrating jubilee years in last week’s upbeat failed to mention Rev. Michael Belinsky, C.S.C., who marks 25 years with the Congregation this year. Fr. Belinsky served at Holy Redeemer parish from 2006 to 2007, and worked in the University’s campus ministry office from 2007 to 2012. His career as a priest has included working at hospice centers and with developmentally disabled adults, serving at Andre House in Phoenix, Ariz., ministering to people with AIDS in San Francisco, and social justice ministry. He is currently associate pastor at Christ the King Church in South Bend, Ind. We regret the omission.

Columbia Prep, 1901-1955

June 2, 2014

PrepperFrom 1901 to 1955 the University of Portland (originally named Columbia University) maintained the Columbia Preparatory school for boys while working to establishing itself as a collegiate university. The prep school had a strong academic program and excelled in athletics, and many of its graduates went on to enroll at the University. The University continues to honor the legacy of Columbia Prep at an annual reunion each year, with the Preppers and their families gathering on campus for Mass and brunch this past Sunday, June 1. The University Museum and Archives have a new post on their WordPress blog about the history of Columbia Prep and a gallery of photos to share the story of the Prep boys.
