2015 Pilot Kids Day Camp

pilotkids2015 copyThe Pilot Kids Day Camp program provides a safe and supportive environment in which your child will work with university students and graduates playing recreational games and sports, creating arts and crafts projects, and much more. Kids will love Pilots Kids camp, which feels like an all-day recess. Counselors and instructors are University of Portland students and alumni who love working with children. They create a welcoming atmosphere and work hard so the kids can have a blast. Open to children entering grades 1-6 in Fall 2015. Camp dates are:

  • Session 1: June 15-19
  • Session 2: June 22-26 (FULL)
  • Session 3: July 6-10
  • Session 4: July 13-17

Cost per session are $115 for children of UP faculty, staff, students, and alumni if registered by May 23, and $130 after that date. General public fee is $130 if registered by May 22, and $145 after that date. Forms and information are available at http://tinyurl.com/3trengm.

Please Load Scholarly Activity Data To Portal

University of Portland, upFaculty members are reminded to load their scholarly activity on the portal in PilotsUP. Data obtained through the portal will be used to populate A Community of Scholars, published by the provost’s office. That data will also be used for the Clark Library’s annual celebration of UP authors. Faculty members will send the data to their respective deans as a part of annual self-evaluation, and they can also use it to develop their personal curriculum vitae.

An Evening With Dr. Tom Greene, May 13

University of Portland, upThe Teacher Leadership Network and the School of Education will present “An Evening With Dr. Tom Greene” on Wednesday May 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Terrace Room. All are invited to engage in a thought-provoking and inspiring evening with University provost Tom Greene, who rose through the ranks as a beloved and well-respected professor in the School of Education.

Greene has served the University not only as provost but as dean of the Graduate School, interim dean of the School of Education, associate dean of the School of Education, and director of teacher education. He joined the UP faculty in 1983, and won the 2010 Culligan Award, the University’s highest faculty honor. He also serves on the boards of several Portland-area educational organizations and has worked in the community as assistant superintendent of both Beaverton and Gresham-Barlow School Districts and in several other administrative and faculty positions throughout Oregon.

smart studentAs the semester draws to a close, faculty are asked to take a moment to reflect on freshmen and sophomores who might be strong candidates for University-endorsed awards, such as Fulbright grants. The Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement’s Talent Identification Program (T.I.P.) uses faculty to help identify high achieving students early in their careers, marking them as potential candidates for various fellowships, grants, and scholarships. Once identified, undergraduate scholarly engagement personnel will meet and work with these students to identify goals for their upcoming years, identify potential scholarship opportunities, and assist in applying for appropriate awards. Neuroeducation Conference Set For May 16

blue brainThe School of Education will present “Neuroeducation: The Road to Inclusive Practices,” a full-day conference dedicated to answering the question, “How do we learn?” through a neuroeducation lens, on Saturday, May 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center. All are welcome; a $15 fee includes lunch and the opportunity to receive .5 CEU graduate credit.

For the past six years, the School of Education has been providing neuroeducation classes designed to triangulate the sciences of language, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology into a translational science for effective inclusive practices. Participants of this conference will receive an overview of how students learn based on these sciences and then, throughout the day, they will select from numerous break-out sessions conducted by educators who are on the road to changing their practices to become more effective inclusive educators. Speakers will include educators from elementary, middle and secondary content education; special educators; support personnel; Catholic and public education; alternative education; and administration.

2015 Faculty Development Day Schedule

tam copyThe 2015 Faculty Development Day will take place on Tuesday, May 5. The day’s schedule can be downloaded at this link.

Faculty will meet in Buckley Center Auditorium for a continental breakfast from 8:30 to 8:55 a.m., followed by a welcome from University provost Thomas Greene and a keynote address by Martin Monto, sociology and social work (“From Diversity to Inclusion”). Following the keynote will be a video presentation by Tanya Crenshaw, engineering (“A Community Against Violence”), and student presentations on inclusion (“What We Wish Our Professors Knew”). Parallel sessions, a luncheon, and more parallel sessions will follow.

Orr, McRee Receive Fulbright Grants To Teach Overseas

orrmcreeTwo University of Portland professors have received prestigious Fulbright grants to teach overseas, according to the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. English professor John Orr will teach in China at a location to be determined, and sociology professor Nick McRee will lecture at Hitotsubashi University and Tsuda College in Japan. Orr and McRee will be two of approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in 2015-2016. The program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, a division of the Institute of International Education.

Orr has taught at the University since 1993, serving as chair of the English department from 1998 to 2005. He was associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2007 to 2008, and is now assistant provost in the Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement. Orr will teach American Literature in his role as a Fulbright Scholar.

McRee joined the UP faculty in 1999. Before that he worked as a research analyst for the Oregon Department of Corrections. His teaching interests include criminology, juvenile delinquency, stratification, and political sociology. McRee will teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in criminology and the American criminal justice system in his capacity as a Fulbright Scholar.

Since 1996, fifteen Faculty Fulbrights have been awarded to UP professors, including business professor Arjun Chatrath in 2005, English professor John McDonald, education professor Blaine Ackley, and business professors Richard Gritta and Mark Meckler in 2007, biology professor Katie O’Reilly in 2012, and English professors Lars Erik Larson and Molly Hiro in 2014. The Fulbright Program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries, and operates in over 155 countries worldwide. Since its establishment in 1946 by the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has given over 318,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, scientists and other professionals the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

Farewell Party For Linda Lechler, May 7

New employee and staff portraitsIt is with a mixture of joy and sadness that Dean Andrews and members of the College of Arts and Sciences ask faculty and staff to join them in congratulating Linda Lechler on her new position as administrative supervisor at Oregon Metro. Linda has been an invaluable team member in the CAS dean’s office for eight years, where she has served as assistant to the dean for personnel and programs. Her farewell party will take place on Thursday, May 7, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in the CAS dean’s office in Buckley Center room 201.
