Founders’ Day, April 14

West HallThe University’s annual Founders’ Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 14. Four sessions of student presentations will be held in place of regularly scheduled classes, and all students and faculty are encouraged to take part in the day’s events, featuring senior presentations, undergraduate research, panel discussions, recitals, and more. Faculty who have questions about the Founder’ Day schedule and how to submit student presenters’ data for the schedule can speak to their school’s liaison (listed below) or contact Michele Leasor, program director, at 8264 or leasor@up.edu.

Welcome Holy Cross Novices

novicesAndrew Higdon, C.S.C., and Vincent Nguyen, C.S.C., arrived at the University of Portland on Wednesday, January 14, and will be here until Thursday, February 12. They are spending a year at the Holy Cross Novitiate in Cascade, Colo., where they and their novice classmates are discerning life as brothers or priests in the Congregation of Holy Cross. Andrew and Vincent are here for an experience of life and ministry with the UP community, and are working with Campus Ministry.

Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center: Come Take A Look

beaucenter3As the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center takes shape, guided tours will be conducted every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., starting January 21. Tour groups will have a limit of 10 people. To set up a tour contact Patty Rubin, facilities planning and construction, at 8874 or rubin@up.edu. Meet at the Skanska trailer on Portsmouth to get hard hats and reflective vests, and please wear durable flat shoes.

Teaching & Scholarship Award Nominations Due Jan. 30

awardsThe Committee on Teaching and Scholarship is accepting faculty nominations for the 2014-2015 Teaching Award and Scholarship Award, according to committee chair Lauretta Frederking, political science. These awards are an opportunity for the University community to celebrate publicly two of its own for outstanding achievements in teaching and scholarship. The committee will accept nominations until noon on Friday, January 30, by e-mail to tas@up.edu. Submission of supporting materials by nominees will be due by noon on Friday, March 20.

Faculty Development Day Proposals Due Jan. 30

FrederkingDec2Given the success of last year’s concentration around teaching ethics across the curriculum, the Committee on Teaching and Scholarship welcomes proposals to lead Faculty Development Day on May 5, 2015, around a particular theme. Interested faculty should submit a 1-2 page proposal identifying the keynote speaker and breakout panels for session one of Faculty Development Day. Sessions later in the day will remain open as opportunities for various and distinct panels proposed by faculty across campus.

Kate Regan Short Film Festival: Digital Lab Workshops

katecameraThe Clark Library Digital Lab is offering informational workshops on Tuesday, January 27, and Thursday, January 29, for anyone who is interested in creating a video for the Kate Regan Short Film Festival. Video submissions are due by Thursday, February 26. The workshops will cover the available video technologies and resources.

ATS Workshop: Introduction to the Moodle Grade Book

staff & faculty portraitsAcademic technology services will offer face-to-face training workshops in the dedicated training lab located in Franz Hall. The first of these will be a Moodle workshop covering the basics of the Moodle grade book on Monday, January 26, from 11 a.m. to noon, in Franz Hall room 010. Many faculty members are busy getting their grade books in order, and now is the best time to learn what to do and what not to do to prevent headaches down the road (and confused students). Classes will cover setting up grade categories, adding grade items, overview of grade weighting methods and which you should use, how to enter grades, do’s and don’ts, and other tips and tricks.

Next Retirement Brown Bag Session: Jan. 28

hThe Office of Human Resources has been coordinating a five part series focusing on developing a holistic approach to retirement readiness. This series is geared towards faculty and staff who are 55 years of age or older. The fourth session, presented by Kaiser Permanente, will talk about how to understand Medicare healthcare coverage. It will take place Wednesday, January 28, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Chiles Center Hall of Fame Room. Employees are welcome to bring spouses or significant others. Refreshments will be provided.

TLC From the TLC

lyndaThis week’s teaching resource is a collection of how-to videos for everything from creating voiceovers for lecture notes to getting the most out of  personal websites. The University’s Lynda.com is chock-full of digital resources for teaching, with videos ranging from a few minutes to several hours, and is available from the Go Media single sign-in portal. This link leads to the Lynda.com welcome page.

The Teaching & Learning Collaborative encourages faculty to scroll through the contents over a cup of coffee (compliments of the associate provost and the TLC) and see the online tutorials that are waiting to assist them. Pilot Women Returning To Action In The Chiles Center

1aPilots150Make plans to join the Pilots women’s basketball team as they return to action in the Chiles Center this week for a big match-up with the Gonzaga University Bulldogs. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets for this game start at just $6 for adults and $4 for kids, and are still available.
