ReadUP Discussion Groups: “The Moor’s Account”

Three discussion groups for faculty and staff, led by Brian Doyle and Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., will be held in the Clark Library conference room to talk about this year’s ReadUP selection, The Moor’s Account:

Tuesday, February 9, 3:30 p.m.

Pick the one that suits you best – all cover the same discussion material. Light snacks will be provided. No RSVP required, just bring your copy of the book and look forward to some engaging conversation.

Parents Night Out, This Friday

University parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, February 5, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $30 for one child or $40 for two kids or more, and includes dinner for the little ones.

Founders’ Day: Tuesday, April 12

The University’s annual Founders’ Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 12. Four sessions of student presentations will be held in place of regularly scheduled classes, and all students and faculty are encouraged take part in the day’s events, featuring senior presentations, undergraduate research, panel discussions, recitals, and more. Classes scheduled to begin after 4 p.m. will be held as usual.

Founders’ Day was first celebrated at the University in 1902, when University founder Most Rev. Alexander Christie visited the school he had established on The Bluff the summer before. He continued his annual visits throughout his tenure as archbishop.

Pilots Track & Field Jumps to 20th in Nation; Kincaid No. 1

The Pilots track and field team recently jumped to 20th in national NCAA ankings, as announced by the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The jump came after a strong showing over the weekend that saw senior Woody Kincaid (pictured) claim the top national time in the 3,000 meters, while teammates Reid Buchanan, Nathan DeVaughn, and Jack Welch also performed well.

Come To Carnaval, Feb. 5

All faculty and staff are invited to join the fun at the annual Carnaval celebration on Friday, February 5, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. Carnaval is a worldwide festival celebrated immediately before Lent every year. This year, UP’s festival will feature authentic food, craft tables, a photo booth, and two performers. The event is free and sponsored by the international languages and cultures department, the Campus Program Board, multicultural programs in student activities, MEChA, and Mesa Redonda.

School of Education Reading Fair, Feb. 28

The University of Portland School of Education will host its 22nd annual Reading Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, in the Chiles Center. The event, “Catch the Reading Wave,” is free and open to the public. The event will be hosted by Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education. Every child attending will receive a free book of their choosing.

The fair’s theme is designed to be an integrated approach to literacy that will engage students from pre-kindergarten to middle school. Kid-friendly activities offered throughout the day will include arts, crafts, and game, all designed with literacy and fun in mind. Local school principals will perform read-a-louds as well. The Reading Fair is a great way to get your child involved in literacy while having lots of fun.

Music At Midweek: Arnica String Quartet, Feb. 3

Members of the Oregon Symphony, including Charles Noble, performing and fine arts (pictured), will join together as the Arnica String Quartet to perform works by Beethoven and Shostokovich at this week’s Music at Midweek, performance, on Wednesday, February 3, at 12:30 p.m., in Hunt Center recital hall. All are welcome to this free performance.

Kids & Family Gym Time In The Beauchamp Center

Recreational services is excited to announce that on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to noon, children of students, faculty, and staff (5-17 years old) are allowed to use the gymnasium area of the Beauchamp Recreation Center. This opportunity for families to spend recreation time together with their children is available to those with membership to the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center.
