Father Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., Memorial Scholarship

oddoTomShortly after his untimely death in 1989, Univer­sity of Portland president Rev. Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., was memorialized by faculty, staff, students, and friends with the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund named after him. Every year the University awards scholarship funds in Fr. Oddo’s name to one or two students who meet a set of criteria which includes demonstrated commitment to service and to service learning.

Nominations are welcome at this time for the next awards to students, and are due by March 18, 2016. A nomination form is available at http://tinyurl.com/m936kyp.

16th Annual Diamond Dinner, With Alan Embree

embree 150 dreamstimeThe University of Portland baseball program is proud to present its 16th annual Diamond Dinner, the official kick-off and premier fundraising event for Pilots baseball. It will be hosted in the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center on Saturday, February 27. The social and silent auction open at 6 p.m., and the dinner and program begin at 6:45 p.m. This year’s guest speaker will be 2004 World Series Champion Alan Embree of the Boston Red Sox (pictured).

Marianne Lloyd Talk, “Prayers, Puns, & Practice,” Feb. 9

lloydSeton Hall professor Marianne Lloyd will give a talk entitled “Prayers, Puns, and Practice” on the role of memory in imagination, faith, and humor on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120.

Lloyd says she won’t be able to prove that God has a sense of humor, but she hopes to provide evidence that such truth should not come as a surprise. The event is part of the Beckman Humor Project, which celebrates humor as “a creative way to puncture arrogance and outwit violence.”

Lloyd, an associate professor of psychology at Seton Hall, researches memory illusions, teaches statistics and research methods and serves on the Faculty Senate and the Board for the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership. She was the 2015 recipient of the Collegium Visionary Award for her work to bring the Catholic mission into her teaching and scholarship. Her talk is sponsored by the Garaventa Center.

William J. Mazzocco Lecture in Distributive Justice, Feb. 11

University of Notre Dame political science professor Christina Wolbrecht will present the 2016 William J. Mazzocco Lecture in Distributive Justice on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m., in Shiley Hall Room 301. Her talk is free and open to all.

Wolbrecht is associate professor and director of the Rooney Center for the Study of American Democracy at the University of Notre Dame. She is the author of The Politics of Women’s Rights: Parties, Positions, and Change, which received the 2001 Leon D. Epstein Outstanding Book Award from the Political Organizations and Parties Section of the APSA, and co-editor (with Rodney E. Hero) of The Politics of Democratic Inclusion and (with Karen Beckwith and Lisa Baldez) of Political Women and American Democracy.

The William J. Mazzocco Lecture in Distributive Justice was established in 2006 to honor 1937 UP alumnus Bill Mazzocco, who had a long, distinguished career in military intelligence with various World War II assignments at diplomatic posts, and made significant contributions to the Marshall Plan. He credited his years at UP with giving him a solid moral foundation that guided his steadfast belief in the principles of equitable and fair distribution of wealth.

Celebrate Thirst Friday, February 12

Tickets Still Available For David Brooks Lecture, March 16

brooks copyDiscounted tickets are still available to faculty and staff for the March 16 lecture by New York Times columnist David Brooks. Faculty and staff can purchase two tickets at half price — the cost per ticket is $10 through the Chiles Center Box Office only (x7525). Additional tickets are available at the full rate of $20 or $25 per ticket, depending on the section. A total of 650 free tickets are also available for UP students.

Brooks hosts National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, is a frequent contributor on Meet the Press, and is author of The Road to Character. His lecture, which is open to the public, will be sponsored by UP’s Dundon-Berchtold Institute for Moral Formation and Applied Ethics, Providence Health and Services, AAA Oregon/Idaho, and Nossa Familia Coffee.

Brooks has a gift for bringing audiences face to face with the spirit of our times with humor, insight, and quiet passion. His current book, The Road to Character, explores the road to a deeper inner life and explains why selflessness leads to greater success. His previous books include The Social Animal, On Paradise Drive, and Bobos in Paradise.

UP established the Dundon-Berchtold Institute for Moral Formation and Applied Ethics in 2012. The Institute is designed to ensure that the University meets its aspirations both to form the moral character of its students and to encourage sustained ethical reflection in business, science, engineering, education, health care, and the arts.

Celebrate Black History Month at UP

MLKIn celebration of Black History Month, the University of Portland hosts their Annual African American Read-In on Tuesday, February 2 in the quiet side of Bauccio Commons, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The event is an opportunity for students and faculty to read and celebrate the writings of African American poets, authors, and artists. The nationally founded African American Read-In has been celebrated in schools, churches, and various organizations nationally for many years.

Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum, Feb. 4

lead like a womanThe Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum will present Elizabeth Pasztor, vice president of the Boeing 747 Program, on February 4, at 7 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120. Her talk is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by the Bauccio Lecture Series.

Pasztor is one of two women vice presidents in engineering at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and has worked in autoflight/flight control systems for many of her 30 years at Boeing.

New “Beacon” Editor Appointed

malikaUniversity president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., has appointed Malika Andrews editor-in-chief of The Beacon for the 2016-17 academic year. Andrews, who is now sports editor, has plans for new video content as well as an improved experience on The Beacon mobile app. The weekly student newspaper will take on an all-digital publication format in fall 2016.

Andrews, who is from Oakland, Calif., covers the Portland Trailblazers for the Associated Press in addition to her Beacon duties. Last summer, she interned at Portland’s KOIN 6 News. Recently, Andrews was one of 12 student journalists from across the country selected by the Sports Journalism Institute for an intensive summer training program that will place Andrews in an internship at the Denver Post. She has also won several journalism awards, including national recognition from the Associated Collegiate Press for her Beacon profile of Pilot athlete Korey Thielke. She currently is awaiting word from the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition, for which she is a finalist.

Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C.
