Honoring Martin Luther King Day: A Vigil for Peace, Jan. 16
All community members are welcome to join University of Portland’s community peace vigil honoring the justice, compassion, and love of Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Monday, January 16, 2017, at 7:15 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. If you cannot attend, stop by the Commons to see the peace intentions that will be offered during the vigil. They will be on display throughout the week. The University will also have a display honoring Dr. King in the Clark Library throughout the week of Monday, January 16. All Aboard For Riverboat, Sept. 2
All faculty and staff are invited to take part in Riverboat, the annual student activities late-night campus tradition, immediately following the men’s soccer Ohio State game on Friday, September 2. The fun goes from 9 p.m. to midnight. Just follow the Villa Drum Squad to the River Campus for food carts, live music, carnival games, photo booths, henna tattoos, and a cash bar. Access to the River Campus will be from behind the President’s House; a shuttle will be available at the Beauchamp Center entrance.

A Lecture With Tim Wise, April 21
Anti-racism writer and educator Tim Wise will speak on the University campus on Thursday, April 21, at 4 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons (quiet side). Due to space limitations, this is a private event for UP students, faculty, and staff only; please bring University of Portland ID to enter the event.
Wise he has given speeches at over 1,000 college campuses and high schools across the U.S., and trains teachers, corporate employees, non-profit organizations and law enforcement officers in methods for addressing and dismantling racism in their institutions. His books include White Like Me: Reflections on Race From a Privileged Son (2004), Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White (2005), Speaking Treason Fluently: Anti-Racist Reflections From an Angry White Male (2008), and Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America (2015).

6th Annual Diversity Dialogues Week
The diversity coordinators in student activities present Diversity Dialogues Week 2016 from Monday, February 22 to Friday, February 26. Through a variety of events planned by diversity-related student clubs and student leaders, Diversity Dialogues Week celebrates and builds awareness about diversity, inclusion, cultural difference, and social justice.

Juniors Set to Host Parents, Families Feb. 19-21
The Office of Student Activities and the student planning committee are gearing up for the 19th Annual Junior Parents and Families Weekend, taking place on campus from February 19 to 21, according to Jeromy Koffler, student activities. Between 225 and 250 families are expected to participate, with approximately 750 overall attendees this year. Please join the junior class and student activities in welcoming our guests when they arrive.

New “Beacon” Editor Appointed
University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., has appointed Malika Andrews editor-in-chief of The Beacon for the 2016-17 academic year. Andrews, who is now sports editor, has plans for new video content as well as an improved experience on The Beacon mobile app. The weekly student newspaper will take on an all-digital publication format in fall 2016.
Andrews, who is from Oakland, Calif., covers the Portland Trailblazers for the Associated Press in addition to her Beacon duties. Last summer, she interned at Portland’s KOIN 6 News. Recently, Andrews was one of 12 student journalists from across the country selected by the Sports Journalism Institute for an intensive summer training program that will place Andrews in an internship at the Denver Post. She has also won several journalism awards, including national recognition from the Associated Collegiate Press for her Beacon profile of Pilot athlete Korey Thielke. She currently is awaiting word from the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition, for which she is a finalist.

Come To Carnaval, Feb. 5
All faculty and staff are invited to join the fun at the annual Carnaval celebration on Friday, February 5, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. Carnaval is a worldwide festival celebrated immediately before Lent every year. This year, UP’s festival will feature authentic food, craft tables, a photo booth, and two performers. The event is free and sponsored by the international languages and cultures department, the Campus Program Board, multicultural programs in student activities, MEChA, and Mesa Redonda.
