UP Accounting Team Takes Second Place In National Competition
A team of University of Portland students finished second in the 2015 AICPA Accounting Competition, held recently in Durham, North Carolina. The UP students’ finish earned a $3,000 award for the University, and the team received a $10,000 award to be split among team members.
The team consisted of students Isaac Mansuetti, Lance Chee, and Connor Ward, all juniors, and UP accounting professor Ellen Lippman, who served as faculty advisor. UP accounting teams have entered the competition twice, taking first with a team of four seniors and this year’s second place finish with three juniors.
Fifty-seven student teams entered the competition and were whittled down to 15 semi-final teams. Those teams received an additional challenge and submitted a video plan, which was reviewed by a panel of judges and voted on by the public (which included votes by UP faculty, staff, and students). The three teams with the best proposals and highest grades made it to the finals to present in person in Durham.
The competition was hosted on the AICPA’s ThisWayToCPA website, which provides tools, articles, and resources to accounting students and CPA Exam candidates.

$100,000 Becic Gift Funds New Professorship
The University has received a $100,000 gift from alumnus John Becic, who graduated in 1952 with a degree in accounting. With his gift, the University has established the John Becic Distinguished Professorship in Accounting within the Pamplin School of Business. Accounting professor Ellen Lippman has been appointed the inaugural holder of the new professorship. In addition, a portion of his gift will provide support for recent and future upgrades of Joe Etzel Field and the University’s baseball program.
Becic has been a strong supporter of the University and its athletic programs, especially baseball. While a student of the University, he was a pitcher for the Pilots baseball team. He had a career in accounting mostly in the Medford area. John and his wife Inez have four daughters and 13 grandchildren and currently live in the Portland area.
The Becic professorship will provide for such activities as a weekly accounting mentoring forum and a professional speaker series to develop awareness of career opportunities and create relationships among students, alumni, and local management professionals. Other plans call for a comprehensive leadership development program offered by the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation.

Helping STEM Students Shine
University of Portland business professor Gary Mitchell and his wife, Veronica, coached a team of 13 Lake Oswego students who recently became robotics world champions. The students, ranging from grades eight through eleven, won the Control Award (for Robot Intelligence) at the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) World Championship, held April 22-25, 2015 in St. Louis, Missouri. Team Axis is a self-funded neighborhood robotics team that just finished its second year of FTC competition.
Only 128 of 4,500 teams from around the world qualified for the annual World Championship. The Mitchells started coaching the team last year when they learned their local high school had no space or budget to support a robotics team. Their son, Colin, is a member of the team as well.
In order to make it to the World Championship, the team had to advance through four levels of competition, including the Oregon State Championship and the West Super-Regional Championship (72 teams from 13 western states). The top 2.9% of teams from around the world competed at the World Championship, including teams from the U.S., China, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, Canada, Australia, Romania, India, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and the Netherlands.
According to the Mitchells, the primary mission of Team Axis is to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) opportunities for kids who do not have access to similar programs through their school.
Team Axis has social media pages at twitter.com/teamaxisftc and www.facebook.com/TeamAxis7187. Additional information on the FIRST FTC program can be found at www.usfirst.org/ftc and information about FTC in Oregon can be found at http://www.ortop.org/ftc/.
