Career Center presents “Job Search 401 for the Class of ’21,” March 11

The Career Center is hosting Job Search 401 for the Class of ’21, a 3-part series to help graduating students prepare now for life after graduation. Topics include: career exploration, job search strategies, wellness, resumes/cover letters, what employers are hiring, and transitioning to life after college. The program begins on Thursday, March 11 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. via Zoom. Faculty and staff who know students who would benefit from the program are invited to encourage them to register no later than Tuesday, March 9. A registration link can be found here.

Destination Declared workshop, March 8 and 10

The Career Center and the College of Arts and Sciences are hosting Destination: Declared – a 2 session workshop series designed to help students explore majors and choose one that will be a good fit. Faculty and staff who know students who may be thinking about changing their major and/or need to declare a major are asked to encourage them to participate.

Virtual Career Treks, March 4

February 25, 2021

The Career Center is collaborating with Pacific Northwest institutions to host a series of virtual career treks. By attending virtual career treks students will have an opportunity to: hear from employees about company culture and career paths, learn about internship and entry-level career opportunities and how to apply, and cultivate and expand their professional network. This week’s trek is on Thursday, March 4 from 4-5 p.m. with Tableau. Additional companies include Vacasa, PNNL, and the FBI.

SWE STEM Virtual Career Fair: Feb. 26

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) STEM Virtual Career Fair will be held on Handshake from 1 – 4 p.m. on Friday, February 26. The career fair is open to all students, though employers are specifically interested in connecting with the following STEM majors: biology, bio-chemistry, biomedical engineering (graduate level), chemistry, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, environmental science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, and operations & technology management.

ESTEEM Master’s Program Virtual Information Session: Nov. 5

UP alumni Declan Kerwin ’20 and Kevin White ’20, who are currently in the ESTEEM master’s program in Entrepreneurship, Technology, & Innovation for STEM Students, will host a virtual information session on Thursday, November 5, at 4:30 p.m., according to Amy Cavanaugh, Career Center.

Notre Dame’s ESTEEM program prepares students with STEM backgrounds to become leading innovators among the world’s most successful startups and corporations, as both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. Business courses, technical electives, a capstone project, and hands-on experience in real startup environments combine to create a uniquely rich experience. UP Internship & Job Expo, Oct. 26

The Career Center invites all business, humanities, and social sciences students to the UP Internship & Job Expo on Monday, October 26 from noon to 3 p.m. This event will take place virtually within the Handshake platform.

Faculty who work with students in the Pamplin School of Business, or humanities and social sciences within the College of Arts & Sciences, are asked to share this virtual recruiting event, created exclusively for University of Portland students and recent graduates. They will have the opportunity to engage with employers hiring for internships and/or full time jobs in group sessions and/or one-on-one video meetings, all within the Handshake platform. The UP Internship & Job Expo is open to all students, though employers are specifically interested in connecting with the following majors: accounting, communication, economics, English, environmental ethics & policy, finance, French studies, German studies, history, marketing, music, operations & technology management, organizational communication, philosophy, political science, psychology, social work, sociology, Spanish, theater, and theology.

Careers in Social Services Industry Night, March 10: All Students Welcome!

In partnership with the Department of Social Work and the Moreau Center for Service & Justice, the UP Career Center invites all students to the upcoming Careers in Social Services Industry Night on Tuesday, March 10, from 4:15 to 6:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120.

Faculty and staff who work with students are asked to let them know they are welcome to this multidisciplinary event, especially those who are interested inopportunities and career paths within various local social service nonprofits and government agencies. Students can gain insight through a professional panel and informal roundtable Q&A, learn about volunteer, internship, and job opportunities, and hear what employers are looking for. Meet UP alumni professionals in the field and hiring managers from over ten local nonprofits. All are welcome regardless of major or class standing.

SWE STEM Career Fair: Feb. 21

The SWE STEM Career Fair is on Friday, February 21, from 1:30-4:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. This career fair focuses primarily on mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and biomedical engineering students, as well as those majoring in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, pre-health professions, mathematics, physics, environmental science, and operations & technology management.

Dave Houglum, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed a six-year commitment on the Board of Directors for the Maybelle Center for Community, with two of those years serving as the Executive Board Secretary. Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C. (former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Portland from 1978-1991), the Maybelle Center disrupts social isolation so we can all experience a healthy, connected life and contribute to a thriving Portland.
