Nicaragua Silent Auction Donations Needed

nicaragua2Donations from faculty and staff have been the backbone of the success of the annual silent auction fundraiser for the Moreau Center’s Nicaragua Immersion service program. All faculty, staff, students, and UP friends are welcome to participate in the silent auction, either as a donor of items or a bidder. This year’s auction will take place from Monday, November 30 through Friday, December 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons main entrance hallway. Single items, gift baskets, tickets to events, signed books, weekends at vacation homes or timeshares, gift certificates to local restaurants, and UP merchandise are just some of the items that have been popular at the auction in the past. Donations can be brought to the Moreau Center any time during the workday from now through Monday, November 23.

UP Wellness Fair: October 28

wellness dreamstime copyAll employees are welcome to attend this year’s UP Wellness Fair on Wednesday, October 28, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120. New and longtime vendors will participate to bring UP employees the latest news about benefits, and will offer massages and great raffle prizes. The University’s employee assistance plan vendor will be here as well as other health-oriented organizations.

Faculty and Staff Needed for International Education Week

flagsIEW is a joint initiative sponsored by the US Department of State and Department of Education. IEW celebrates internationalization and diversity on college campuses across the nation each November. This year, UP will celebrate IEW from November 16th through 20th.

International Student Services and the International Club are seeking faculty, staff, and student group collaboration to highlight international exchange and education on campus. Please consider hosting an event during the week to share or promote your international and intercultural programs, research, student projects and more! The IEW coordinating team will assist in promoting the week of events, speakers, music and workshops to the UP campus and community.

Laurie Laird Appointed as Director of Moreau Center

Laurie Laird copyLaurie Laird has been appointed as director of the University of Portland Moreau Center. Laird comes to The Bluff after two years with Jesuit Volunteer Corp Northwest and fifteen years of service in higher education at Santa Clara University. Laurie has collaborated with campus ministry and residence life to develop living and learning communities. Laird will begin her role on Monday, Oct. 26.

Laurie has master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from San Jose State University and a bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University.  She has also worked for Global Fund for Women, personally studied and traveled internationally, and accompanied students on domestic and international immersion service trips.

Applications open for CISGO seed grants for faculty and students.

planet-earthApplications are now open for CISGO seed grants for both faculty and students. CISGO seed grants can be used for academic and/or field experiences that help provide greater understanding of international, intercultural, and/or development issues.

Alumnus Ben Berry ’74 to speak on campus, Oct. 15

benberry copyThe Pamplin School of Business and APICS Portland Chapter will be hosting a talk by UP alumnus Ben Berry ’74 on Thursday, Oct. 15 from 6-8:30 p.m. in Shiley Hall Room 301. Berry, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Digital Officer for AirShip Technologies Group, will speak on AirShip’s move from an airframe proprietary mold process to a 3-D Printed Additive manufacturing process. AirShip’s Strategic Manufacturing program is designed to carve out market share in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) industry that is currently $11.3B and on track to reach $94B by 2017.

Music At Midweek: UP Piano Quartet

pianoThe next Music at Midweek performance will feature UP Faculty Kevin A. LeFohn (violin), Asst. Principal Viola with Oregon Symphony Charles Noble (viola) and Susan McDaniel (piano), who will join with Oregon Symphony Orchestra’s Trevor Fitzpatrick (cello) to create the UP Piano Quartet.

Music at Midweek is free and open to all; performance begins at 12:30 p.m. in Mago Hunt Center recital hall.

Earthquake Preparedness, Oregon Shake Out coming Oct. 15 and 17

alertThe University of Portland will participate in the Oregon Shake Out, an earthquake education awareness program and drill where people are asked to drop, cover, and hold on, on Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 a.m. Informational videos are posted on the public safety website at www.up.edu/publicsafety.

The University will also host three events for earthquake preparedness on Saturday, October 17:

  • Disaster Relief Trials, a cargo bike ride across Portland simulating disaster relief supplies being transported around the city, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (http://disasterrelieftrials.com/)
  • Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup CREW is holding a Preparedness Fair for the entire community, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (http://www.crew.org/news-events/calendar/earthquake-info-fair)
  • Regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Olympics, a citizen trained responder challenge exercise bringing teams from Oregon and SW Washington, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (https://www.facebook.com/CERTOlympics).

New HR Director Named

chungSandy Chung has been appointed director of human resources for the University of Portland, according to Alan Timmins, vice president for financial affairs.

Chung has extensive experience in human resources from her current position serving as director of employee and labor relations at Stanford University, and prior position as director of human resources and chief Title IX & diversity officer at Santa Monica College. She specializes in employment and equal learning opportunity laws, and has experience in work culture issues, compliance, processes, systems, and analytics.

A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, Chung is also a member of the California and Oregon State Bars. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, immigrated to the United States as a child, and grew up in the Portland area, where she graduated from Sunset High School. Chung will assume her new duties beginning December 1, 2015.
