Need A Parents Night Out?

stressed-out copyUniversity parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, November 4, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $30 for one child or $40 for two kids or more, and includes dinner for the little ones.

Parents Night Out takes place during the academic year on the first Friday of each month, and is not limited to children already enrolled in UP daycare. For more information or to sign your kids up, contact Andrea Palacios, director, at (503) 283-9688 or andreap@vhflc.com.

Retiring Faculty Ceremony, Reception, April 22

American Cancer Society Relay For Life, April 16

relayThe UP chapter of Colleges Against Cancer will hold its annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life on Saturday, April 16, from noon to 8 p.m., in the Academic Quad on campus. All UP community members are encouraged to join teams or form their own for this event.

The Relay For Life program will honor cancer survivors and caregivers and feature the society’s mission to save lives from cancer. The funds raised at Relay support patient services, lifesaving research, prevention education, and advocacy efforts. Relay For Life is a community event where teams and individuals gather at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times and participates in fundraising that supports the American Cancer Society’s mission.

Three million participants registered in more than four thousand events worldwide in 2015. Last year, 372 people participated in Relay For Life of University of Portland and raised $30,000. Dexheimer Leadership Fellows Wanted

New employee and staff portraits

The Franz Center is providing free leadership training and development for faculty and staff who want to learn more about becoming a Dexheimer Leadership Fellow. There are over 70 faculty and staff from across the University who have been trained as Dexheimer Leadership Fellows and the Franz Center is seeking to include 30 additional faculty and staff who will begin their training next fall. Dexheimer Leadership Fellows serve as instructors and coaches in the Leader Certificate program and earn a stipend of $2,500 for their teaching and coaching.

Lenten Visio Divina: Give Yourself A Gift

Calming the Storm.jpgGive yourself the gift of quiet meditation during this most holy time of Lent. Join with members of the UP community as we pray with illuminations from The Saint John’s Bible each week on Tuesdays during Lent (except for Spring Break week) at 12:45 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. This form of prayer is called Visio Divina. You will be guided through a 40-minute meditation using one of the stunning illuminations from The Saint John’s Bible as the focal point. Visio Divina is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Garaventa Center.

The Biblical Truth About America’s Death Penalty, March 14

recinella copyDale Recinella, chaplain for Florida’s death row, will explore challenges to the death penalty rooted in sacred Scripture on Monday, March 14, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120. His talk is free and open to all.

Recinella has served for 25 years as a spiritual counselor and Catholic correctional chaplain, ministering to men on Florida’s death row. His talk will offer a riveting integration of Scripture, law, history, and theology from his books denouncing America’s death penalty, including The Biblical Truth About America’s Death Penalty (2004), and Now I Walk on Death Row: A Wall Street Finance Lawyer Stumbles into the Arms of a Loving God (2011).

Request Software for Summer, Fall 2016 by March 18

computerIt is time again for information services to begin the process of creating computer lab and classroom builds for 2016 summer and fall terms. Whatever has been installed on the computers for spring 2016 will not be on the computers for summer or fall unless a specific request is made. Exceptions include Microsoft Office, internet browsers, and anti-virus protection. Since the build and deployment process is extremely labor intensive, requests must be submitted no later than Friday, March 18. Please click here to submit software requests.

A special note to the School of Engineering: software installed outside of Shiley 208, engineering classrooms, or specialty labs must be requested though this format. Otherwise, contact Andrew Nuxoll for engineering software requests.

Nominate Students for Franz Center’s Leader Certificate Program

student leaders copy2All faculty members are invited to nominate eligible, outstanding students for the Leader Certificate course (LDR 225) offered in fall 2016. During this course students explore what it means to be a leader using the 7 Leader Habits within Common Leader Vocabulary, assess and understand their strengths, explore several leadership theories, and create a personalized leader development action plan with a leader coach. The ideal nominee is a student who demonstrates academic excellence, has a unique passion for learning and relates well to others.

Honorees for 2016 Commencement

lunds150The University of Portland has announced the honorees to be recognized during the 2016 Commencement ceremonies, which will be held on campus in the Chiles Center on Sunday, May 1. To accommodate the increasing number of graduates and family members, there will be two ceremonies this year: Commencement I, which begins at 10 a.m., is for graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education; Commencement II, which starts at 2 p.m., is for graduates of the Pamplin School of Business, Shiley School of Engineering, and School of Nursing.

Regent D. Allen Lund and his wife, Kathleen Lund (pictured), will receive the University’s highest honor, the Christus Magister Medal.The Lunds are longtime supporters of the University of Portland and Catholic education. Allen is the president and CEO of the Allen Lund Company, a transportation and logistics provider he established in 1976, and he is also chairman of the University’s Board of Regents.

University of Portland alumnus Fedele Bauccio ’64, ’66 MBA, ’04 Hon., co-founder and CEO of Bon Appétit Management Company, will deliver the address for the University’s morning Commencement ceremonies. Bauccio co-founded Bon Appétit in 1987 after working for more than two decades in the food service industry. Bon Appétit now operates more than 650 highly customized onsite restaurants at corporations, private universities, museums, and sports venues in 31 states.

Columbia Sportswear CEO Tim Boyle will receive an honorary doctorate and deliver the address at the University’s afternoon commencement ceremony. He started his career at Columbia in 1971 when his father died, joining his mother, Gert Boyle, in expanding the small, Portland-based sportswear company into a globally recognized brand with net sales of more than $2.3 billion in 2015.

Steve Shepard graduated from the University with a degree in business in 1958, and has been a member of the Board of Regents since 1989. He and his wife Donna are namesakes and benefactors of the University’s Shepard Academic Resource Center, which has transitioned from its original mission as a center for helping first-year students transition to college to its current focus of serving the academic needs of all students.

Educator and electrical engineer Eleanor Baum holds the distinction of being the first female dean of an engineering school in the United States, serving in that capacity at Pratt Institute starting in 1984. She is also the first woman to be president of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Rev. Robert S. Pelton, C.S.C., is concurrent professor emeritus, theology director emeritus, Institute for Pastoral and Social Ministry Director emeritus, and director and founder of Latin American/North American Church Concerns at the University of Notre Dame.

Women’s sports pioneer Cathy Rush was head basketball coach at Immaculata College from 1972 to 1977. Her “Mighty Macs” won the 1972, ’73, and ’74 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) championships. After retiring from coaching, Rush became the first female commentator for women’s basketball on national television in 1978.

Ron Thomas became the thirteenth president of the University of Puget Sound in 2003, a position he will hold until the end of June 2016. Under his leadership, Puget Sound was named the nation’s number one producer of Peace Corps volunteers in 2007 for universities its size and, in 2006, a top-ten producer of Fulbright Scholars for baccalaureate colleges.

State of the University, Alumni Awards, March 1

Poorman, C.S.C., will deliver the annual State of the University Address and present the 2016 Alumni Awards on Tuesday, March 1, at the Sentinel Hotel (614 SW 11th, Portland). Doors open at 11:30 a.m., with the program from noon to 1 p.m. Fr. Poorman’s talk will include an update on the new student residence hall taking shape on N. Willamette Boulevard and many other factors affecting the University’s success.

Also on the agenda will be the annual Alumni Awards. This year’s winners are Joe Hollman ’64, Distinguished Alumni Award; Julie Johnson ’86, Rev. Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., Outstanding Service Alumni Award; Shane Deckert ’07, Contemporary Alumni Award, and UP senior Shelley West ’16, winner of the Thomas A. Gerhardt ’55 Memorial Award for Student Leadership.

Dave Houglum, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed a six-year commitment on the Board of Directors for the Maybelle Center for Community, with two of those years serving as the Executive Board Secretary. Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C. (former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Portland from 1978-1991), the Maybelle Center disrupts social isolation so we can all experience a healthy, connected life and contribute to a thriving Portland.
