“Passing Over: Migration and the Eucharist,” Oct. 3

September 28, 2018

Fr. Dan Groody, C.S.C., of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at Notre Dame, will offer a lecture titled “Passing Over: Migration and the Eucharist” at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, in the Bauccio Commons Dining Room. The event is free and open to all.

In his talk Fr. Groody asks, amidst the divisive and polarizing rhetoric around migrants and refugees today, what does it mean to be witness to the Body of Christ? Annual Bauccio Lecture Features Entrepreneurial Thought Leader Emily Ma

University of Portland is proud to welcome Emily Ma as the 2018 Bauccio Lecture Speaker on Tuesday, October 2, at 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. The lecture is free and open to all.

Ma is the head of special projects, business innovation for X, a research and development facility founded by Google. X was built on the simple premise of making the world a better place through solutions that would have a 10x impact. Any project that X takes on must solve a problem that affects millions or even billions of people and there must be some hope that the solution can be achievable in 5-10 years.

“Boeing Boeing” Opens Oct. 3

September 28, 2018

Andrew Golla, performing and fine arts, will direct “Boeing Boeing” by Marc Camoletti with performances on October 3-7 at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday) in Mago Hunt Center Theater. Described as “An uproarious farce set in 1960s Paris,” the play has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most performed French play throughout the world. “Boeing Boeing” Pre-Play Panel and Reception, Oct. 6

Zachary Price Lecture, “Constitutional Law in a Polarized Era,” Oct. 3

Zachary Price of the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, will present “Constitutional Law in a Polarized Era” on Wednesday, October 3, at 5 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. His lecture is free and open to all.

Before entering academics, Price served for three years as an attorney in the Office of Legal Counsel, a component of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. that provides authoritative legal advice to the President, Attorney General, and executive branch agencies. He has also worked as a litigator in private practice and clerked at all three levels of the federal judiciary, for Judge Catherine C. Blake of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, Judge David S. Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the U.S. Supreme Court. He graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 2003 and from Stanford University with honors and distinction in 1998.

On-Site Flu Shot Clinic, Oct. 4

Faculty and staff who are covered under UP’s Kaiser health insurance will have an opportunity to receive a flu vaccination sponsored by the HR office on Thursday, October 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic will be held on campus in Franz Hall room 120. Please bring a Kaiser Permanente card along with photo ID to receive a flu shot.

Summer Research Poster Session: Students Must Apply By Oct. 2

 All faculty are requested to encourage their students who had on- or off-campus research experiences this past summer to apply to participate the fifth annual Summer Research Poster Session by Tuesday, October 2. The application is available at this link. One application is needed per poster being presented, and the student presenter should complete the application.

The Summer Research Poster Session will occur on Tuesday, October 30, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Franz Hall lobby and Franz Hall 120. All are encouraged to come see the amazing research opportunities many of our students had this past summer, both at UP and all across the nation and world. Students will be presenting posters of their work and will be available to answer questions about their research.

Social Justice Lecture With Kathy Kelly, Sept. 26

International peace activist Kathy Kelly will deliver the Social Justice Program’s annual lecture, “Of Immigration, Intervention, and the U.S.,” on Wednesday, September 26, from 5:30-7 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 319. All are welcome for a stimulating lecture that emphasizes the importance of understanding the role of United State foreign policy in contributing to problems of migration in the world. Kelly is an internationally recognized peace activist and speaker who has received numerous awards for her activities in advancing peace and justice. She has recently been active in protesting drone strikes in Yemen and in America’s continued involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Schoenfeldt Writer Omar El Akkad Lecture & Book Discussion, Nov. 1

The Schoenfeldt Writers Series, in partnership with the English Department, proudly presents award-winning journalist Omar El Akkad as the fall Series speaker. El Akkad will be speaking about his debut novel, American War, on Thursday, November 1, at 7 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium.

El Akkad’s novel American War is a post-apocalyptic novel set during the second American Civil War in the year 2074. A darkly prescient tale, American War depicts a country and world torn apart by war, conflicts about fossil fuels, environmental catastrophes, and a devastating plague.

A discussion with the author will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, in the Terrace Room. A limited number of books for this event are available at no charge to the campus community; email schoenfeldt@up.edu to request a copy. Those who receive a free book are expected to attend the discussion.

Women in Leadership Forum with Shari Dunn, Sept. 26

The Women in Leadership Forum will kick off its new series of meeting with Dress for Success executive director Shari Dunn on Wednesday, September 26, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. Attendance is free, but please register using this link if you plan to attend.

Dress for Success’ vision is a world where women do not live in poverty; are treated with dignity and respect; and are strengthening their families and shaping their communities. Dunn is also an adjunct faculty member in the Pamplin School of Business.

The Women in Leadership Forum connects UP students with dynamic women who are leaders in the greater Portland community. The Forum is a place for sharing stories, building connections, and supporting the development of women in leadership.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
