Women’s Leadership Forum Welcomes Katie Hughes, Feb. 25

The Women in Leadership Forum welcomes Katie Hughes, executive director of Girls Build, on Tuesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., in Franz 120. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to hear Katie’s story of leadership. The Women in Leadership Forum connects the UP community with dynamic women who are leaders in the greater Portland community. The Forum is a place for sharing stories, building connections, and supporting the development of women in leadership.

Katie is a carpenter with a social work degree earned at UP in 2002 who, after spending 10 years teaching construction to adults and kids, founded Girls Build. She believes that all girls should be curious and confident, and that one route to that is through learning the building trades.

Women In Leadership Forum Guest Speaker: Stephanie Salomone, Sept. 10

The Women in Leadership Forum welcomes UP mathematics professor and STEM Center director Stephanie Salomon on Tuesday, September 10, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. The Women in Leadership Forum connects students, faculty, and staff with dynamic women who are leaders in the Portland community. The Forum is a place for sharing stories, building connections, and supporting the development of women in leadership. Salomone will share her experiences as a woman leader in STEM and academia, as well as insights she’s gained around inclusion, equity, and mentorship.

Women in Leadership Forum Returns March 19

Pamplin School of Business alumna Julie Stillwell Culp will be the fourth guest speaker in the Women in Leadership Forum series on Tuesday, March 19, at 7 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. She will be the final speaker of the year. Please RSVP as soon as possible by using this link.

Stillwell Culp started her career as director of admissions at St. Mary’s Academy, then worked at Target in human resources, and now serves as a regional director at Audigy. In that role, she supports teams who build recommendations in operations, finance, marketing, human resources, and professional development for business owners based on opportunities to increase market share.

The Women in Leadership Forum is a place for sharing stories, building connections, and supporting the development of women in leadership.

Women in Leadership Forum with Shari Dunn, Sept. 26

The Women in Leadership Forum will kick off its new series of meeting with Dress for Success executive director Shari Dunn on Wednesday, September 26, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. Attendance is free, but please register using this link if you plan to attend.

Dress for Success’ vision is a world where women do not live in poverty; are treated with dignity and respect; and are strengthening their families and shaping their communities. Dunn is also an adjunct faculty member in the Pamplin School of Business.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
