Nominate Students For Diversity and Inclusion Annual Scholarship

February 22, 2019

The development office invites you to recommend one to two students for the Diversity and Inclusion Annual Scholarship. Nominees should be working to promote diversity on campus through their involvement in on-campus activities, in the classroom, and/or through their participation in community service. Which student(s) stand out to you as leaders in our efforts to make our campus more diverse and inclusive? The recipient will receive the scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year, so nominees should be freshmen, sophomores, or juniors. Please include a brief summary of why you are nominating them.

The nominated students will be invited to answer a short application which will be reviewed by a committee made up of faculty, staff, and students from the UP community. Once selected, the recipient will be recognized during the conclusion of Diversity Dialogues.

The Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship was created in 2016-17 by then Student Body President Brandon Rivera, in collaboration with other executive board members. This scholarship looks to not only continue the conversation of diversity and inclusion but to promote positive changes to the climate at UP. The topic of diversity is important because it allows a community to come together in unity and create a more inclusive place.

All student nominations are due by Wednesday, February 27, to Connie Ozyjowski, development, at  ozyjowsk@up.edu.

Zeal, Providence, Hospitality: Did You Know?

February 22, 2019

Every Catholic religious order was founded to address a particular problem of a time and locale. In the case of the Congregation of Holy Cross, that problem was the devastation wrought by the French Revolution, which had led to suppression of public worship and the shutting down of many Catholic communities. Nearly two generations of French Catholics were ill-informed about their faith. Basil Moreau’s band of priests, brothers, and sisters formed in order to be dedicated educators in the Catholic faith; that is the work the Church acknowledges that they do, and what their constitutions say they are to do. That is the principle of Holy Cross charism; several other charisms in the “DNA” of Holy Cross men and women fuel their audacious task. Among these are zeal (an unwavering spark for and commitment to living out their call), reliance on Divine providence (understanding that God can and does use any circumstance or human choice to reveal something of God’s love to a world ravenous for meaning and purpose ) and hospitality (commitment to be the face of Christ to all who show up and, perhaps more importantly, to see the face of Christ in all who show up).

“Did You Know?” is a sort of regular feature in upbeat intended to help staff and faculty understand dimensions of this Catholic, Holy Cross university. You can send questions to Fr. Jim Gallagher (Campus Ministry) or Karen Eifler (Garaventa Center).

Write @ Night: Walk-In Hours at the Writing Center

February 22, 2019

Do your students have papers due just before Spring Break? At the Writing Center, we’re piloting evening walk-in hours at busy times in the term. These hours are perfect for students who don’t want to commit in advance to a 30- or 60-minute appointment; they’re ideal for those “just in time” writing needs students often have as they begin or finish essays. Next Tuesday and Wednesday, February 26-27, 8-10 p.m., in the Writing Center (BC 163). See the campus flyer here. Please spread the word among your students!

TLC From The TLC: Think-Pair-Share Explained

February 22, 2019

Think-Pair-Share is a classic way to improve equity and engagement in the classroom, according to Carolyn James, mathematics. Students think about a prompt individually, discuss their ideas in pairs, and the instructor leads a discussion as student share their ideas with the whole class. Think-Pair-Share can easily be extended; consider having students write during think time (even in a STEM class) or using technology (like polling software) to share ideas more equitably. In particular, Dr. Derek Bruff recommends Think-Pair-Share-Analyze, in which students make sense of, compare, and evaluate the ideas shared by their classmates. Read more about Think-Pair-Share in Dr. Bruff’s blog,  Agile Learning.
