Calling all UP faculty and staff! Let our seniors know how proud we are of them by putting on your academic regalia (or your own appropriate take on regalia) and creating a quick 30 second video. Email your video to upsocial@up.edu by May 1. The video may be posted on the University of Portland’s main social media accounts for Commencement Weekend.

Latest CASE Awards: Gold, Silver, Bronze

The marketing and communications office received notification of the following awards in the 2020 Best of CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Awards:

  • A gold award for University of Portland Junior Viewbook, produced by Rachel Barry-Arquit, Elizabeth Gilmore, Amy Shelly, Patricia McDonald, Frances Pimentel, Jason McDonald, Tanya Wangsmo, Ologie Agency, in the category “Alumni, Student, Donor and Community Engagement: Viewbooks and Prospective Student Publications.”
  • A gold award for “UP Admissions Rebranding Campaign: Wonder,” in the category “Visual Design: Print Design: Series of Related Publications.” Team: Rachel Barry-Arquit, Elizabeth Gilmore, Amy Shelly, Patricia McDonald, Frances Pimentel, Jason McDonald, Tanya Wangsmo, Kris Travis of Firesign Design, and Ologie Agency.
  • A silver award for “UP Wonder Transit Design” (ads appearing on Tri-Met buses), in the category “Visual Design: Environmental Graphic Design.”
  • A silver award for “First Gen: Changing the Possible” by Anna Lageson-Kerns, Adam Guggenheim, Amy Shelly, and Connie Ozyjowski in the category “Video and Multimedia: Multimedia for Special Events.
  • A silver award for Portland Magazine, Winter 2019, in the category “Magazine: Print General Interest Magazines, Circulation Under 30,000.” Editor: Jessica Murphy Moo.
  • A silver award for “Here Goes” by Jessica Murphy Moo, in the category “Editorial Shorts (Print or Web, less than 1,000 Words”
  • A bronze award for the “Love on The Bluff” campaign in the category “Advancement Practices and Initiatives: Alumni, Student, Donor and Community Engagement Programs,” by Roya Quirk, Petra Khan, Frances Pimentel, and Amy Shelly.
  • Honorable mention for Portland Magazine’s “J.H. Carroll, We Remember You,” in the category “CASE Platinum Awards: Best Article of the Year.” Author: Eileen Bjorkman.

These latest awards follow a strong showing in the July 2019 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards, which recognized advancement work on a national level:

  • The hard-bound edition of Sweet Dreams, Storycatcher was a Grand Gold winner for book design, one of only 26 Grand Golds awarded. The book is a collection of essays written for Portland Magazine by the late Brian Doyle.
  • The Junior Viewbook earned a bronze award in the viewbook/prospectus category, out of 132 bronzes awarded, citing “The University of Portland’s viewbook beautifully conveys the university’s interest in the life of the mind, beginning with the cover statement, ‘when we wonder’…” It was one of four to be recognized in the viewbook/prospectus category.

Award recipients will be recognized at the Best of CASE VIII Awards Luncheon on Thursday, January 30. Gold awards will be considered for the Grand Gold in their award categories. The Virginia Carter Smith Grand Crystal award, recognizing the most outstanding entry of the year, will be selected from the Grand Gold winners.

Faculty Profiles: Are You Up To Date?

Faculty members: is your web directory profile up to date? Visit up.edu/directory and search for yourself. If your profile needs to be updated with new awards, professional affiliations, publications, or a new CV, contact your department superuser, or contact Amy Shelly (shelly@up.edu) or Roya Ghorbani-Elizeh (ghorbani@up.edu) for help.

If your title, phone, or office location is inaccurate, please contact hr@up.edu to make updates.

If you need a new photograph, sessions are offered monthly. Keep an eye on upbeat for announcements.

Profiles can include any or all of the following: a brief (one paragraph) narrative summary of your education, professional background, and research interests; a list of degrees received (degree, institution, year awarded optional); awards; professional affiliations; publications (please limit to the five or so most recent); and a link to your CV. (Note: if you choose to include your CV, this is available to the public on the internet, and you may wish to omit your home address, personal email, etc.).

UP’s First VP for Marketing & Communications: Michael Lewellen

University of Portland President Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., has appointed Michael E. Lewellen to the newly formed position of vice president for marketing and communications. He will lead the offices of marketing and communications, public affairs, and printing and mailing services effective July 15.

Before joining UP, Lewellen was the vice president of corporate communications and public engagement for the Portland Trail Blazers and Rose Quarter, overseeing media relations, crisis response, and civic engagement.

Lewellen served as senior vice president for corporate communications at Black Entertainment Television (BET) Networks and worked in corporate development and urban and minority affairs for NIKE. His career has also included senior positions with Heart of Florida United Way, NBC Universal/Universal Orlando Resort, and Fox Sports Network.

Lewellen is active in the local community. He is the chair of the board of directors of the Urban League of Portland and is on the board of the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center Foundation, All Hands Raised, and the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs. He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and in 2018, was awarded the Pat Tobin Award for career achievement by the National Black Public Relations Society – Los Angeles.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Aziz Inan, Shiley School of Engineering. recently shared some of his work on palindrome dates with the staff of Farmers’ Almanac which lead to an articled titled “2021: A Special Year For Palindrome Dates, Starting This Month!” See the article using this link.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.

Steven Kolmes, environmental studies, wrote an editorial on “Sustainability and the Role of Higher Education” in Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development, Vol. 62, , pp. 2-3. Amber Vermeesch, nursing, received an Opus Prize Foundation Grant Sabbatical Support, Opus Prize Foundation, $5,000, on November 12, 2020.
