Lenten Visio Divina: Give Yourself A Gift

Calming the Storm.jpgGive yourself the gift of quiet meditation during this most holy time of Lent. Join with members of the UP community as we pray with illuminations from The Saint John’s Bible each week on Tuesdays during Lent (except for Spring Break week) at 12:45 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. This form of prayer is called Visio Divina. You will be guided through a 40-minute meditation using one of the stunning illuminations from The Saint John’s Bible as the focal point. Visio Divina is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Garaventa Center.

Rene Sanchez Lecture on Social Justice, March 1

University of Portland theology professor Rene Sanchez will speak on social justice in the Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 1, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church (25 N. Rosa Parks Way, Portland), at 7 p.m. (English) and Saturday, March 5 at 9 a.m. (Spanish). The event is free and open to all.

Sanchez will focus on the seven key principles of Catholic Social Teaching: Life and Dignity of the Human Person; Call to Family, Community, and Participation; Rights and Responsibilities; Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers; Solidarity; and Care for God’s Creation.

A Fond Farewell Fête For Ken Hallênius, Feb. 29

kennethPlease join the alumni relations staff on Monday, February 29, at 3:30 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120 to thank Ken Hallenius for 15 years of devoted service to the University of Portland. Hallenius has accepted a position at the University of Notre Dame as communications specialist for the Center for Ethics and Culture.

Ken joined the University in August of 2001, serving in residence life for six years before joining alumni relations in 2007. His quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge of UP alumni will be sorely missed. He often remarks that his career with UP has been “three of the happiest years of my life.”

Work-Life Balance: SOPHIA Sponsored Workshop, March 1

sophiaHow best to balance faculty work and non-work responsibilities, interests, and aspirations is a persistent question. Please join SOPHIA for an interactive workshop about these balancing acts on Tuesday, March 1, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons President’s Boardroom. The workshop offers a chance to articulate the challenges faced by senior-level faculty and strategize about how to meet them.

SOPHIA is a faculty engagement program, charged by the provost to explore and provide faculty development opportunities for senior-level faculty. Since work-life issues cut across faculty careers, we welcome all faculty members to participate. However, given the group’s charge, they are especially interested in the shape this question may take for those already tenured and promoted. Refreshments will be served.

Fine Wine, Fine Cheese, Fine Conversation

Transformation Fridays: Sacrament of Reconciliation

prayerEvery Friday during Lent the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The Blessed Sacrament will also be exposed for Adoration at that time. Reconciliation will also be offered on Mondays from 9-10 p.m. and Wednesday from 5-5:30 p.m. It is also available by appointment with individual priests.

Last Week to Take the Clark Library Survey

Please take 15 minutes and take the Clark Library survey online. The library surveys the campus community every three years to understand the needs of all groups. The data are used to inform the library’s planning process, and the more people that respond, the better they can do with meeting the campus community’s needs.

2016-2017 Bulletin Updates Due March 14

bulletincover.jpgFaculty and staff members who are tasked with updating their departmental and office information in the 2016-2017 University Bulletin need to submit changes to reviewers by Monday, March 14, according to Tom Greene, provost. The Smartcatalog tool used to update information can be accessed by going to the “Provost” section under the Academics pulldown menu on the main UP webpage. The link is located under “Faculty Resources” at http://tinyurl.com/ad5nzkk (“Smart Catalog (Online Bulletin) Login”) or by using this link. Access is limited to designated users who have been issued usernames and passwords.
