A Fond Farewell Fête For Ken Hallênius, Feb. 29

kennethPlease join the alumni relations staff on Monday, February 29, at 3:30 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120 to thank Ken Hallenius for 15 years of devoted service to the University of Portland. Hallenius has accepted a position at the University of Notre Dame as communications specialist for the Center for Ethics and Culture.

Ken joined the University in August of 2001, serving in residence life for six years before joining alumni relations in 2007. His quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge of UP alumni will be sorely missed. He often remarks that his career with UP has been “three of the happiest years of my life.”

  • Student must be a graduating senior;
  • Student must have demonstrated leadership throughout his or her undergraduate career;
  • Student must demonstrate consistent dedication to the University and the community through service to God and neighbor.

Fields Hall Trivia Night, Nov. 4

kennethFields Hall staff will present Trivia Night (starring Ken Hallenius and Brenda Greiner), their annual fundraiser for Holy Cross Missions, on Tuesday, November 4, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., in the Terrace Room. It’s great fun and open to all members of the UP community for a mere $2 donation. Prizes include Holy Cross packages such as dessert at the president’s house with Fr. Mark Poorman, a tour and history of the Bell Tower with Fr. Gerry Olinger, and dessert at Papa Haydn with Fr. John Donato and Fr. Ed Obermiller. A Trivial Affair, November 9

kennethAlumni relations invites alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to join in Trivia Night on Saturday, November 9, starting at 7 p.m., in the Cove, according to trivial pursuer Ken Hallenius. This family-friendly evening consists of multiple rounds of questions, each round featuring a different theme. We’ll throw in some UP trivia, video questions, worksheets, and even a bit of math! Teams are welcome to bring snacks, and we welcome up to 10 people per team. A dessert buffet is included with the $7 per person entry fee, and a wine and beer cash bar will be available. Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Aziz Inan, Shiley School of Engineering. recently shared some of his work on palindrome dates with the staff of Farmers’ Almanac which lead to an articled titled “2021: A Special Year For Palindrome Dates, Starting This Month!” See the article using this link.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
