University of Portland faculty, staff, and students will enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday this year on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24. All offices will be closed.

The Open Enrollment period for UP benefited employees ends this Friday, November 17, at 4:30 p.m. All benefited employees are required to confirm or change their healthcare benefits before the Open Enrollment period closes. Remember, to continue with a Flex Spending Account or Share the Savings, you will need to submit a new enrollment form. Details regarding Open Enrollment and links to forms can be found on the benefits section of the HR website.

Employees are reminded that Spring 2018 tuition remission requests are due by November 15 in order to avoid late charges on students’ accounts. There are separate application forms for undergraduate course work and graduate courses. A tuition remission summary is also available on the HR website at this link.

The UP Wellness Fair, which takes place in the Beauchamp Center on Wednesday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will kick off the 2017 Open Enrollment for employee benefits. Faculty and staff who are covered under UP’s Kaiser health insurance will have an opportunity to receive a flu vaccination sponsored by the HR office on Friday, October 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic will be held on campus in Franz Hall room 120. You will need to bring your Kaiser Permanente card along photo I.D. in order to receive a flu shot.

The nomination period for the 2017 Staff Awards will be Monday, October 16 through Friday, November 3, according to Meg Farra, human resources. Award recipients will be announced at the Staff Christmas Luncheon on Monday, December 18. The nomination form can be found here: 2017 Staff Award Nomination Form.
Departments are encouraged to submit departmental photographs for the luncheon slide show. Photo submissions can be sent to santa@up.edu and are due by Tuesday, December 12.
The UP Wellness Fair will take place on Wednesday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center. Once again, the Wellness Fair will kick off the University’s open enrollment period. There are a limited number of openings for additional booths. Please contact Laura Barnard, human resources, if you or a vendor may be interested in hosting a table. All vendors must be approved by HR.

Kaiser Permanente has announced their 2017 walk-in flu shot clinics. The dates and times are Saturday, October 7 through Friday, October 20, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flu shots are available at no cost to Kaiser members, with no appointments necessary.
Remember, the flu is a serious virus that can cause severe illness. A flu shot can protect you against the flu, which is why Kaiser doctors recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu shot every year.

A representative from TIAA, which administers the University’s retirement accounts, will be on campus on September 11-13, in the Clark Library conference room (no. 222), according to Laura Barnard, human resources. Financial counseling appointments are available during work hours on those days in the Clark library, but appointments must be scheduled at www.tiaa-cref.org/schedulenow or by calling call TIAA at 877.842.2028 (press 5 to schedule an appointment).
