CISGO Fall Update and Presentation by Blair Woodard, Oct. 12

The Collaborative on International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) invites faculty members and staff to attend their next fall meeting on Thursday, October 12, 4-5:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons Terrace Room. There will be a brief update on the many university-wide initiatives that are advancing core strategy 4 of Vision 2020, “to infuse our entire community with a sense of internationalization and diversity.”

Following the updates, Blair Woodard, history, the first recipient of the Kate Regan Faculty Development Award for Junior Faculty in the Humanities, will discuss the research he conducted in Cuba this past summer and the ways in which this work will enhance his own teaching materials and further develop intercultural and international learning at UP.

“A Dangerous Woman” with Eileen Markey, Oct. 10

Investigative journalist Eileen Markey will offer a free lecture, “A Dangerous Woman: Faith, Politics and the Assassination of Sr. Maura Clarke,” on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. In her talk, Markey (pictured) chronicles the spiritual and political journey that led Maryknoll Sister Maura Clarke to a Cold War martyrdom in El Salvador in 1980. Hosted by the Garaventa Center. Ninth Annual UP Authors’ Reception, Oct. 5

All campus community members are invited to the Clark Library’s UP Authors’ Reception on Thursday, October 5, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. This year it will be held in the Parberry Room on the library’s upper floor. The reception is a celebration of works published by faculty, staff, and student authors in the previous year. Drop by as you can to mingle with colleagues, see their publications, and enjoy refreshments.

Pilots Soccer Begins Conference Play This Weekend

Join the men’s and women’s soccer teams this weekend as they begin conference play. Clark Library Guide to Data Management

Check out the Clark Library’s Data Management guide to learn more about data management plans, tools for analyzing data, tips for documenting your data, and ways to store and preserve it. The guide includes a list of repositories where data can be stored and resources to walk you through constructing a data management plan. The more organized your data, the easier it is to work with and share with others.

Portside With the Pilots: New Episode, Oct. 4

Pilots fans can catch an all-new episode of Portside with the Pilots on Wednesday, October 4, at 9 p.m., live on NBC Sports Northwest. As of October 2, CSN will now be branded as NBC Sports Northwest.

The weekly show looks into all things Pilots and this week’s show will feature University of Portland track senior Brent Knutzen, who is a first year workshop leader in the Shepard Academic Resource Center. There will also be an in-depth conversation with UP men’s soccer goalkeeper Paul Christensen, and a look back at the weekend in athletics, which included the WCC openers for women’s soccer, the first conference road trip for the UP volleyball team, and a couple of Top-10 opponents for the men’s soccer team.

Kaiser Permanente Flu Shot Clinics Open Soon

Kaiser Permanente has announced their 2017 walk-in flu shot clinics. The dates and times are Saturday, October 7 through Friday, October 20, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flu shots are available at no cost to Kaiser members, with no appointments necessary.

Remember, the flu is a serious virus that can cause severe illness. A flu shot can protect you against the flu, which is why Kaiser doctors recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu shot every year.

Kaiser members can visit this website to find a location near them.
