Cyber Security Awareness
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. As we continue to increase internet use throughout all aspects of our lives, we need to be even more aware of potential threats to information security. The information services division is committed to raising awareness across campus to ensure a safe and secure computing environment. In recognition of the important role each of us plays in securing University of Portland information and systems, please follow these guidelines:
- Take personal responsibility for security and use good security practices.
- Be aware of email phishing scams by carefully examining sender e-mail addresses.
- Use caution when downloading or clicking on any unknown links.
- Lock your computer whenever you leave your work or study area.
- Treat your mobile device like the powerful computer it is and protect it. Only connect over a secure network (i.e. PilotsWPA) and lock your device using a passcode.
- Use strong passwords, change them regularly and never share them with anyone.
- Follow University of Portland Acceptable Use and Information Security policies. and promptly report all security incidents or concerns to the University help desk (7000, help@up.edu).
- Safeguard sensitive data from any inappropriate disclosure.
- Use privacy settings and do not post personal, sensitive, or non-public information on social media.
- Do not participate in cyber bullying activities.
- Raise awareness of good security practices among family, friends, and colleagues.
Throughout the remainder of this academic year expect to see more communications and outreach regarding information security at the University. Our policy documents are located on the University of Portland Policies and Disclosures website. For information about the University’s theft prevention software program available to all staff, faculty and students, see the FrontDoor Software website.
Open Enrollment Update
Employees who are benefit eligible will receive an Open Enrollment e-mail at the beginning of November which will give them the opportunity to either confirm that they would like to continue with their current coverage or elect to change their current coverage. The e-mail will include renewal rates for 2013, a link to the online enrollment/confirmation sites, and information on all of our coverage options. This year all enrollment for Flexible Spending accounts will be processed directly through our Flexible Spending vendor at www.Flex-Plan.com. Human resources will not be sending out paper forms this year.

Welcome, Lynda
The information services team is proud to offer Lynda.com to the University community, according to Sam Williams, academic technology services. Lynda.com is free to University faculty, staff, and students, who will receive unlimited access to a vast library of high quality, current, and engaging video tutorials. New courses and topics are added every week.
To view information on Lynda.com and to see a sample course playlists go to https://wordpress.up.edu/lynda/. To access Lynda.com, use Go.up.edu, the University of Portland’s new Single Sign On (SSO) solution. This feature has long been requested by end users to save time and provide ease of access. Learn more about Go.up.edu at http://wordpress.up.edu/go/. To access lynda.com now visit: https://go.up.edu/.
If you are experiencing problems with Go.up.edu or Lynda.com please notify the help desk at 7000 or help@up.edu.
Palanca, Please
A group of 35 students will be attending the Encounter with Christ Retreat along with 22 student leaders from October 25 to 27, according to Beth Barsotti, campus ministry. Faculty and staff members are asked to consider writing a note (palanca) to students they may know who will be attending the retreat. This is an opportunity to encourage students and express appreciation for them outside the classroom. Each retreatant will receive an envelope of surprise palanca. Please do not discuss this concept with students to keep it a surprise.
A list of those going on the retreat can be found at www.up.edu/campusministry/palanca. Please submit palanca to the campus ministry office in the Pilot House or St. Mary’s. Mark your envelope with “Encounter Retreat—(student’s name)” and bring it by Wednesday, October 23. Please forward any questions to Barsotti at 7463 or barsotti@up.edu.
New Display: Mago Hunt Center 40th Anniversary
October 17, 2013 marked 40 years since the dedication of Mago Hunt Center for Performing Arts. After a fire in 1969 destroyed the buildings housing the music and drama departments, William “Bill” Hunt, then chair of the board of regents, generously financed the new facility named in honor of his wife, Mago Hunt. In honor of this milestone for the performing and fine arts department, all are welcome to view a pictorial display of Mago Hunt Center created by the University Museum in the display case across from the Shepard Freshman Resource Center on the first floor of Buckley Center. The University Museum is located in the basement of Shipstad Hall in room 014. Open Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and also by appointment. University faculty, staff, and students are invited to stop in and learn more about the University’s history. Contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at 8038 or piatz@up.edu for more information.
