Chris Haug Named NWASAP President

Christopher Haug, director of residence life, was recently installed as president of the Northwest Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NWASAP) at its annual conference in Sunriver, Oregon. NWASAP, the oldest regional college student personnel organization in North America, brings together professionals in a variety of roles within student affairs offices throughout the Northwest. In his role as president, Haug will be the official representative of NWASAP and will preside at all meetings of the association, and will serve as chair of the annual conference.

Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum: Joane Moceri, Nov. 10

The second Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum of the year will be Tuesday, November 10, at 7 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120. Nursing dean Joane Moceri will share the story of her path to leadership, the decisions and choices along the way, and the unique gifts and challenges to being a woman in her role.

The Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum connects students with dynamic and successful women leaders from UP and the greater community to highlight the idea that to “Lead Like A Woman” is to lead from women’s unique experiences and perspectives. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome.

Student Extended Stay Requests Due By Nov. 13

October 16, 2015

Any departments that will be sponsoring students to stay on campus after the traditional halls close on December 18, or to arrive before the halls re-open on January 9, are asked to complete a Department Extended Stay Request, according to Jessica Wode, residence life. If your department did not receive a copy of the template for making this request (sent October 13), contact residence life at reslife@up.edu or 7205.

Requests are due by Friday, November 13, to wodej@up.edu. Departments will be charged $42 per person per night unless they specify that the students’ accounts should be charged. Students who are not working for any department but wish to request an extended stay for themselves should submit a Petition Form to Modify Housing Contract to the residence life office.

Boys & Ghouls Welcome For HALLoween, Oct. 31

The Campus Programming Board and the Office of Residence Life will sponsor the annual HALLoween trick-or-treating night on Saturday, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. Children through sixth grade are invited to trick-or-treat through the University’s residence halls, a great way for children and their families to enjoy Halloween in a safe and controlled environment. Resident students enjoy this fun opportunity to give and reach out to members of their neighboring community.

All children wishing to participate in HALLoween must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Picture ID is required upon check in for all parents and guardians. There will be one check in location, under a tent in front of the Chiles Center. Everyone must check in at this location.

Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum: Lead Like A Woman

The Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum is in its second year and is now open to the greater campus community, according to Molly Cullen, residence life. Faculty and staff are invited to join with students to hear a talk by Jeanne Haster, executive director of Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest, on Thursday, September 24, at 7 p.m., in the Terrace Room in Bauccio Commons.

The Kenna Women’s Leadership Forum is an opportunity to hear the stories of women in leadership around the Portland community and engage in conversation around those stories and experiences of leadership.

Campus Resource Fair, Aug. 21

The Office of Residence Life will be hosting its Campus Resource Fair during hall staff training in August, and all departments and offices are invited to participate. The Resource Fair will be held on Friday, August 21, from 12:45 to 2 p.m. This is an opportunity to connect resident assistants to as many departments on campus as possible and to potentially provide them with programming knowledge and ideas. RAs will also be able to assist in getting each department’s name and mission out to the on-campus student population.

New Student Residence Hall Announced

The University has announced plans to construct a new residence hall with room for approximately 270 students, to be located on the UP campus adjacent to the newly constructed Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center. The University aims to have the project begin this summer and be completed prior to the start of the 2016-17 academic year.

The ground floor of the new residence hall will include a spacious lobby, a classroom, office space, a dining concession, and a chapel, while the top three floors will house students. With the construction of Fields and Schoenfeldt Halls, renovations to existing dorms, and completion of the new residence hall, the University will have increased its on-campus student housing capacity by 53 percent since 2009.

Early Arrival Student Sponsors Take Note

All department that will be sponsoring students to arrive on campus prior to the standard move-in dates (August 27 for new students, August 29 for returning students) are asked to complete a Department Early Arrival Request, according to Jessica Wode, residence life. Templates for making this request were sent on July 6; please contact residence life at reslife@up.edu or 7205 if they did not arrive.

Kick-start Into Service Initiative

The Moreau Center and Office of Residence Life are implementing a new initiative during the 2015-16 academic year to continue cultivating the campus culture of service through the creation of the “Kick-start into Service” initiative. The new program replaces the “Building Community: Serving to Learn” service project that has traditionally occurred over Labor Day weekend.

Each residence hall will be provided kick-starter funds to develop a hallmark service program at the local, national, or global level. These programs will be unique for each hall depending on the passion and gifts of each residence hall team (hall director, resident assistants, sustainability coordinators, intercultural coordinators, faith and formation ambassadors, service and justice coordinators, and pastoral residents). The programs will encourage an intentional discernment process for the one-time or ongoing service/social justice related initiative. Additional mini-grant funds will be available for residence hall leadership teams to apply for and to increase the impact of their service initiative.

The Kick-start into Service initiative is rooted in the mission and values of Holy Cross, which promote service to and with others in multiple cultural contexts. By building a greater capacity and culture for students to live out service and social justice, this program provides key experiential transformative learning opportunities.

Schoenfeldt Hall Director Changes

March 30, 2015

Brock Vasconcellos (pictured), who currently serves as assistant hall director of Schoenfeldt Hall, has been named interim hall director for April 1 through May 31. Previous hall director Joe Coulter has accepted a position at the Boys & Girls Club of Portland, and his final day at UP will be Tuesday, March 31.
