The Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership is Coming to the University of Portland

February 2, 2018

The University of Portland is participating in the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), an international research study that provides important insights on the leadership development and learning needs of college students. The students’ responses will help faculty, staff, and administrators at the University of Portland measure how we are doing compared to other peer institutions and will allow researchers to better understand how experiences in and outside the classroom impact life and perceptions at college. Students who are selected will receive an email invitation to complete this important online survey on February 6, and the survey will close on February 25.

Please support the University of Portland’s investment in participating in this study by encouraging students in your areas of study to respond. If you have any questions concerning this research study, please feel free to reach out to Dave Houglum, director for leadership, or Elizabeth Lee, director for institutional research.

For more information concerning the study, please visit: https://www.leadershipstudy.net/.

Invitation to Nominate students for the Leader Certificate Program for Fall 2017

February 17, 2017

The Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation invites all faculty and staff members to nominate students for the first course in the Leader Certificate Program (LDR 225) offered in fall semester 2017. The Leader Certificate Program is designed to provide leaders with the tools, knowledge, and ability to impact and inspire their followers using key leader character habits. During LDR 225 (Foundations of Leadership), students explore the foundations of leadership by learning about the seven University of Portland Leader Character Habits and several leadership theories, gain critical self-awareness concerning their values, vision, mission, goals, and strengths, and create a personalized leader development action plan. The Leader Certificate Program is open to students of all majors and takes approximately two years to complete. If you know of any students who might benefit from the Leader Certificate Program, please e-mail Dave Houglum (houglum@up.edu) the names and e-mail addresses of students. Please send him your recommendations by Friday, February 24.

Kick-start Into Service Initiative

July 10, 2015

service2015 copyThe Moreau Center and Office of Residence Life are implementing a new initiative during the 2015-16 academic year to continue cultivating the campus culture of service through the creation of the “Kick-start into Service” initiative. The new program replaces the “Building Community: Serving to Learn” service project that has traditionally occurred over Labor Day weekend.

Each residence hall will be provided kick-starter funds to develop a hallmark service program at the local, national, or global level. These programs will be unique for each hall depending on the passion and gifts of each residence hall team (hall director, resident assistants, sustainability coordinators, intercultural coordinators, faith and formation ambassadors, service and justice coordinators, and pastoral residents). The programs will encourage an intentional discernment process for the one-time or ongoing service/social justice related initiative. Additional mini-grant funds will be available for residence hall leadership teams to apply for and to increase the impact of their service initiative.

The Kick-start into Service initiative is rooted in the mission and values of Holy Cross, which promote service to and with others in multiple cultural contexts. By building a greater capacity and culture for students to live out service and social justice, this program provides key experiential transformative learning opportunities.

For more information, contact Dave Houglum, Moreau Center, at 8559 or houglum@up.edu.
