The University of Portland Orchestra will present Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” on Saturday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all. “Scheherazade,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s epic musical tale based on the story of The Arabian Knights, is one of the most popular works ever composed for orchestra. Music At Midweek, Feb. 5
Patrick Murphy, performing and fine arts, will discuss his recent trip to Moscow during this week’s Music at Midweek, on Wednesday, February 5, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. The event is free and open to all. Murphy will focus on the trials and tribulations he faced in attempting to obtain musical materials from the Soviet era, despite the opinion of other researchers that “it simply can’t be done.” From stories of being held at gunpoint to photos of Lenin’s tomb, all are welcome to look and listen into one of the world’s greatest musical enigmas.
David De Lyser, performing and fine arts, will also present “Hosanna Filio David: The compositional process from concept to performance” (or, “How to compose a work that includes your own name”). De Lyser will discuss his process of fulfilling a commission for an original choral work written for and premiered by the Palm Sunday Chorus of Central Wisconsin. Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert, Nov. 23
The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Women’s Chorale will perform in concert on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. The photography of Ansel Adams will be celebrated in a new composition by Steve Danyew entitled “The World Alive,” featuring the Wind Symphony performing in conjunction with a short film based on Adams’ work. During the concert, senior flutist Kristin Wishon will take center stage in a performance of Joel Puckett’s “The Shadow of Sirius,” inspired by the poetry of W.S. Merwin. An Evening At The Theater
Students of vocal music and theater will join forces in “An Evening at the Theater: Highlights from Operas and Musicals” on Friday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Recital Hall, according to Nicole Leupp Hanig, performing and fine arts. The program will include music from The Magic Flute, Cabaret, Guys & Dolls, Little Women, Hansel & Gretel, Into the Woods, West Side Story, and others. Admission is free and open to all. Advent Concert Tickets Available Now
Free tickets are now available for the Advent Concert on Saturday, December 7, at 8 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral. “Alkestis” Opening Nov. 8
The classic Athenian play Alkestis will be performed November 8-10, and 14-16 in Mago Hunt Center Theater. All performances are at 7:30 p.m., except the Sunday performance, which is at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Alkestis, the earliest known work by classical Athenian playwright Euripides, is an ancient story of the living dead. The all-female cast gathers to celebrate the woman Alkestis, who is fated to die in her husband’s place. The ensemble cast, all University of Portland students, is made up os Emily Claire Biggs, Tori Dunlap, Annie Ganousis, Taylor Kendig, Beth Lageson, Hannah Lingenbrink, Alexa Redmond, Danielle Renella, Elyse Rybka, and Kristen Schmidt. The play is directed by graduate student Andrew Wardenaar and costume design is by Gregory Pulver, performing and fine arts.
