Women's Chorale

Wind Symphony & Women’s Chorale, Nov. 17

November 9, 2018

The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Women’s Chorale will present a concert on Saturday, November 17, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. No tickets are required.

The concert will feature Canadian composer Cait Nishimura for the world premiere of her newest piece, In Dreams, and a performance of Athabasca. In addition, the Women’s Chorale will perform the lively Japanese children’s song, Hotaru Koi and the Wind Symphony will present music from the film Spirited Away. The two ensembles will join together to perform Sigur Ros’ plaintive ára bátur, featuring UP saxophone and jazz professor Don Norton.

University Singers & Women’s Chorale Concert, Oct. 6

The University Singers will open their concert season with Shall We Gather At The River, featuring selections from a wide-ranging repertoire, including the music of Copland, Schubert, Gjeilo, Thompson. and others. The concert takes place on Saturday, October 6, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The Women’s Chorale will perform selections to haunt and inspire; from Paul Neal’s intense arrangement of Mendelssohn and Hölty’s Hexenlied (Witches Song), to Abbie Betinis’ gorgeous cannon, Be Like the Bird and René Clausen’s All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye The Lord!

Women’s Chorale Concert: Treble Night, April 25

April 20, 2018

The UP Women’s Chorale will be joined by other treble choirs from Clark College, Marylhurst University, Lindfield College, and the women of the University Singers as they celebrate the beauty of the treble voice on Wednesday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.

The Women’s Chorale will perform the heartbreaking Largo from Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Nancy Grundahl’s energetic arrangement of Followers of the Lamb, and Moira Smiley’s body percussive take on Bring Me Little Water, Silvy. Each choir will perform their own set, and in a stunning finale, 100 women will join together to sing Warrior by Kim Baryluk and Gwyneth Walker’s This Morning aka Hey Girl.

University Singers and Women’s Chorale Concert: Feb. 18

The Women’s Chorale, directed by Kathryn Briggs, will perform an intriguing program of vocal jazz/pop a cappella selections along with traditional choral literature on Sunday, February 18, at 1 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The University Singers, directed by Michael Connolly, with student conducting associate Lupita Zamora-Resendiz ’18, will also perform a variety of choral favorites. Free and open to all.

University Singers and Women’s Chorale Concert, Oct. 10

The University Singers and Women’s Chorale will take the audience on a musical tour during their concert on Saturday, October 10, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The Women’s Chorale, directed by Kathy Briggs, will perform music from Venezuela, Russia, Germany, and America. The University Signers, directed by Michael Connolly, will preview music from their upcoming January tour, with a mix of sacred and secular pieces, including a zippy medley from the 1960s. Connolly asks the eternal question: “Doo wah diddy, anyone?”

Concerts A-Plenty: UP Orchestra, Women’s Chorale

orchestraThe University of Portland Orchestra will present “American Voices,” a free concert on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome. Highlighting works of American composers and performers, this concert will feature Aaron Copland’s stirring Lincoln Portrait, with narration by Edmund Stone of All Classical Portland. Also on the program will be the premiere of Prometheus, composed by University of Portland senior Dana Coppernoll-Houston, and arias by 2014 Student Concerto/Aria contest winner Amelia Segler.

On Wednesday, April 22, the University of Portland Women’s Chorale will present “Girls Night Out: A Festival of Women in Song,” at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all, and features women’s choirs from UP, Vancouver School of Arts & Academics, Clark College Women’s Chorale Ensemble, Lewis & Clark College Voces Auream, and Portland State University Vox Femina.

The University welcomes Kathryn Briggs as the new director of the Women’s Chorale with this all-choral program featuring American music, including works by Stephen Paulus, Portland’s own Joan Szymko, and honorary University of Portland alumnus Aaron Copland. Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert, Nov. 23

symphonyThe University of Portland Wind Symphony and Women’s Chorale will perform in concert on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. The photography of Ansel Adams will be celebrated in a new composition by Steve Danyew entitled “The World Alive,” featuring the Wind Symphony performing in conjunction with a short film based on Adams’ work. During the concert, senior flutist Kristin Wishon will take center stage in a performance of Joel Puckett’s “The Shadow of Sirius,” inspired by the poetry of W.S. Merwin.
