University Wind Symphony

University Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert, Oct. 3

orchestra2 copyThe University Wind Symphony and Orchestra will open the 2015-2016 concert season with a free performance on Saturday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. All faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome.

The Wind Symphony features violin instructor Kevin Lefohn performing the American premiere of Peter Adams’ Concerto Burlesca for violin and wind band; conducting associates Tara Egan and Samantha Wright will also make their concert debuts. The UP Orchestra presents Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor featuring music student Maranda Hamilton; also Hubert Parry’s rollicking Symphonic Variations, and the iconic “Nimrod” movement from Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

UP Wind Symphony Invited to 2015 Oregon Music Education Conference

symphonyThe University Wind Symphony has been invited to perform at the 2015 Oregon Music Education Association conference in Eugene, Ore., in January 2015, according to Patrick Murphy, performing and fine arts. The wind symphony was selected through a blind audition process, and this will be the first time a UP instrumental ensemble has ever performed at a professional conference. They will perform at the Hult Center’s Soreng Theater on January 16 or 17, and the concert will be free and open to the public.

The Wind Symphony consists of 55 members representing every school on campus. This year’s ensemble boasts 17 freshmen, and is conducted by  Murphy. Undergraduate conducting associates for 2014-15 are seniors Brian Carter and David Yee.

The wind symphony’s next on-campus concert will be its Slavic Concert on the afternoon of December 6, featuring the American premiere of Boris Kozhevnikov’s “First Symphony” and junior mathematics major and oboist Janna Riley performing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Variations on a Theme of Glinka.” Two hundred  tickets are being given to the Portland/Vancou­ver Russian community, so please call the PFA office at 7228 or pfa@up.edu to reserve seats.

Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert, Nov. 23

symphonyThe University of Portland Wind Symphony and Women’s Chorale will perform in concert on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. The photography of Ansel Adams will be celebrated in a new composition by Steve Danyew entitled “The World Alive,” featuring the Wind Symphony performing in conjunction with a short film based on Adams’ work. During the concert, senior flutist Kristin Wishon will take center stage in a performance of Joel Puckett’s “The Shadow of Sirius,” inspired by the poetry of W.S. Merwin. Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert

1aWindsymphony150The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Orchestra will perform in concert on Saturday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. In an all-Russian program, the Orchestra will feature student concerto competition winner Cem Inan playing Rachmaninoff Concerto no. 1, as well as selections from Stravinsky’s Firebird, and Lyadov’s 8 Russian Songs. The Wind Symphony program includes Joaquin Turina’s La Procession du Rocio and premiere performances of pieces by Anthony O’Toole and Benjamin Taylor. Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert

The University Wind Symphony and Orchestra will present “Heart, Healing, and Hope,” dedicated to health care organizations, and the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf, on Sunday, March 3, at 5 p.m., in Buckley Center auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.

Wind Symphony musical selections will include a world premiere by composer Martin Ellerby, and an American premiere by Daisuke Shimizu. The University Orchestra will feature the music of Sergei Prokofiev. Student concerto competition winner Ryan Chien will play Prokofiev’s dramatic Piano Concerto no. 1, followed by Proko­fiev’s most famous work, Peter and the Wolf, featuring UP’s very own provost, Tom Greene, as the narrator.
