The drama department recently launched a new Facebook page, intended to serve as a hub for behind-the-scenes action, upcoming performance information, and tidbits from the theater world as a whole. The new page is PFA’s latest tool to get the word out about the exciting art that students at University of Portland are creating. Romeo and Juliet Concert, April 22
The University of Portland Orchestra will present the “Romeo and Juliet” concert, featuring Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, on Tuesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Admission is free and all are welcome. The orchestra will perform two of the most famous musical depictions of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, from the drama and lush Romanticism of Tchaikovsky to the restless, jazz-tinged energy of Bernstein. Reception, Panel Discussion For “Cymbeline,” April 12
Drawing on the gifts of our faculty, the Garaventa Center will host a wine and cheese reception prior to the April 12 performance of Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline” beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. A panel featuring the show’s designer and UP faculty members will illuminate surprising dimensions of the play and will hone audience members’ enjoyment and appreciation of the show. The panel discussion will be 6:45-7:15 p.m.; “Cymbeline” curtain is at 7:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public; tickets for the performance are available through the Hunt Center box office at 7287.
2014 University Jazz Festival: April 9-10
The annual University of Portland Jazz Festival takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, April 9- 10, all day, in the Chiles Center, according to the performing and fine arts department. The festival features middle school and high school jazz bands competing from throughout the region. Attendance is free and all are welcome. Music At Midweek, March 5
Music at Midweek performers for Wednesday, March 5 are sopranos Rebecca Wascoe from Texas Tech University and Nicole Leupp Hanig, performing and fine arts (pictured). They will be joined by pianist Richard Bower. Their free performance begins at 12:30 p.m. in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. Theatre Students Shine
University of Portland performing and fine arts students received the following awards at the 2014 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (Region VII) at the University of Boise in Boise, Idaho, on February 18-22:
- Jordin Bradley received an acting scholarship award of $500 toward enrollment fees for CSU Summer Arts 2014
- Jeff Phillips received a Full Ride Scholarship to California State University’s Broadway Bound Summer Course
- Danielle Renella received a Full Ride Scholarship to California State University’s Michael Chekhov Acting Technique Summer Course
- Amy Billroth-MacLurg received a Full Ride Scholarship to California State University’s Social Action Writing: Personal to Political, Words at Work Summer Course

PFA Presents “Woyzeck,” Feb. 26-March 1
The performing and fine arts department will present Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck on February 26-28 and March 1 in Mago Hunt Center Theater. All performances are at 7:30 p.m., with two performances set for Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. No Sunday matinee is scheduled for this performance. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For reservations starting February 17, call the Hunt Center Box Office at 7287.
Woyzeck is an intriguing tale of an everyman being pushed and pulled in a world that tests and manipulates him in every way. Written in 1836, this gripping and engrossing story of one man’s struggle has been produced in many languages and countries, and this version has been adapted by the director especially for our time. The performance contains adult language and stage violence.
The cast, all University of Portland students, is made up of Michael Rexroat (Franz Woyzeck), Danielle Renella (Marie), Emily Biggs (Andrea), Jennifer Beierle (Margaret), Tyler Hunt (Karl the Idiot), Hope Dorman (Katey), Tim Dobson (Grandmother), Samantha Steele (Patient 1), Doug Blair (Patient 2), Jeffery Phillips (The Doctor), Logan Matthews (The Captain), Jacob Orr (The Major), Annie Ganousis (The Sergeant), and Peter Sotos (The Attendant).

UP Orchestra Concert, Feb. 22
The University of Portland Orchestra will present Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” on Saturday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all. “Scheherazade,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s epic musical tale based on the story of The Arabian Knights, is one of the most popular works ever composed for orchestra. Music At Midweek, Feb. 5
Patrick Murphy, performing and fine arts, will discuss his recent trip to Moscow during this week’s Music at Midweek, on Wednesday, February 5, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. The event is free and open to all. Murphy will focus on the trials and tribulations he faced in attempting to obtain musical materials from the Soviet era, despite the opinion of other researchers that “it simply can’t be done.” From stories of being held at gunpoint to photos of Lenin’s tomb, all are welcome to look and listen into one of the world’s greatest musical enigmas.
David De Lyser, performing and fine arts, will also present “Hosanna Filio David: The compositional process from concept to performance” (or, “How to compose a work that includes your own name”). De Lyser will discuss his process of fulfilling a commission for an original choral work written for and premiered by the Palm Sunday Chorus of Central Wisconsin.
