Advent Concert

2017 Advent Concert, Dec. 9: Get Tickets Starting Nov. 1

The University’s annual Advent Concert will take place on Saturday, December 9, at 8 p.m., at Saint Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Tickets will be available starting November 1; admission is free but tickets are required due to limited seating.

The Advent Concert will feature the University Singers and Women’s Chorale, with Michael Connolly and Kathryn Briggs directing and Lupita Zamora-Resendiz as student conducting associate. Musical settings will include the Gloria, the song of the angels at Bethlehem.

Annual Advent Concert Tickets Now Available

5871-2015-advent-concert-300-dpi-s-1Free tickets are now available for the Advent Concert, a performance by the University Singers and Women’s Chorale at Saint Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday, December 3, at 8 p.m. Choral music for the Advent and Christmas seasons will be interspersed with readings and carols. The featured work is Misa Criolla, by Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez.  This mid-20th century work incorporates authentic Latin American folk styles into sacred music. The music will be directed by Michael Connolly, Kathryn Briggs, and student conductors Molly Kerns and Jasmine Tsai. Tickets are free but required for admission to this popular holiday concert. Get tickets now at the performing and fine arts office in Buckley Center or by x7228.

Advent Concert Tickets Still Available

1aSingers150The Advent Concert is scheduled for Saturday, December 5, at 8 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Advent Concert is the highlight of the year for the University Singers, directed by Michael Connolly, and Women’s Chorale, directed by Kathryn Briggs. The featured composition is “A Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten, accompanied by UP faculty member Jenny Lindner on harp. Advent readings and Christmas carols will get everyone in the mood for the festive Christmas season.

Tickets are free, but they are required to make sure everyone can be accommodated, since this event brings a full audience. Request tickets at x7228 or in the PFA office in Buckley Center 235.

Advent Concert, Dec. 6: Tickets Still Available

AdventConcert copyMake music a part of your holiday plans with the annual Advent Concert featuring the University Singers on Saturday, December 6, at 8 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The choir and orchestra will perform Vivaldi’s magnificent Gloria in the beautiful acoustics and space of the cathedral. Michael Connolly, performing and fine arts, will conduct. Tickets are free but required for entry, and are usually gone by Thanksgiving. Tickets are still available through the performing arts department (Buckley Center room 235). Advent Concert Tickets Available Now

Contact the performing and fine arts office at 7228 or pfa@up.edu to be sure of getting tickets to this popular holiday concert.  The University Singers will present selections from Handel’s Messiah with professional orchestra and student soloists Rodrigo Gaspar-Barajas, Amelia Segler, Meagan Usselman, Katrina Welborn, and Ashley Woster. Michael Connolly with conduct. This concert is always full and tickets will likely be gone before Thanksgiving, so please get yours right away.

Earth to Kenzie, a youth opera by librettist Jessica Murphy Moo, marketing & communications, and composer Frances Pollock, premiered in Chicago this fall, with public family performances in November. After Kenzie and her mom are displaced from their home, Kenzie relies on her imagination, the wild and funny antics of her video-game avatar, her mom, her teacher, and a new friend from the family shelter to get through a tough time. Philip Vue, Clark Library, received a $12,720 Oregon Heritage Commission Grant from Oregon Parks and Recreation Department in November 2019.

Simon Aihiokhai, theology, presented “Achieving Success in College,” a talk given at the National FGEN Day at the University of Portland, organized by the Shepard Academic Resource Center, November 8, 2019.

Rachel Wheeler, theology, was elected as secretary/treasurer of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality in November 2019. She presented “The Revelatory Tide: Desert Spirituality and Contemporary Water Crises” and “Reading Luce Irigaray for an Elaboration of the Shared as Ascetic Practice” at the American Academy of Religion, San Diego, CA, November 2019.
