Mass of Remembrance for Allen Lund, Joe Allegretti: May 10

On Thursday, May 10, faculty and staff are invited to join members of the Board of Regents and the Holy Cross community for a Mass held in honor of D. Allen Lund and Joseph B. Allegretti. The Mass will take place at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. All are welcome to join in this celebration of the lives and legacies of these two individuals who have served, supported, and shaped this University in countless ways.

New Portland Magazine Editor: Jessica Murphy Moo

Jessica Murphy Moo has been appointed editor of Portland magazine, the award-winning publication of the University of Portland. A writer, editor, and teacher, Murphy Moo comes to UP from Seattle, where she has been senior communications manager for the Seattle Opera, as well as an adjunct instructor teaching nonfiction writing for the University of Washington’s Professional and Continuing Education program. She was formerly a staff editor at The Atlantic and fiction editor at Memorious, an online literary magazine.

Murphy Moo, who will begin her role at the University in July, follows the late Brian Doyle as the editor of the magazine, a literary publication that reflects both Catholic tradition and a unique Pacific Northwest aesthetic. In addition to her fiction and nonfiction work in various literary journals and magazines, Murphy Moo also profiled a group of Benedictine nuns who live on Washington’s Shaw Island for Portland magazine in 2008.

Murphy Moo says her top priority when she arrives will be to get to know the people who comprise the UP community and their stories. “In my experience, most people don’t know that their life and their work tell a story. The value of writers resides in our ability to connect the dots between a person’s every day and a person’s heart. In that space, story and mystery abound.”

Her fiction has appeared in The Atlantic, Image, and Memorious, and Signs of Life, an anthology for Seattle-based writers. Her nonfiction has appeared in Portland magazine, Poets & Writers Magazine, ParentMap, The Tablet, Boston College Magazine, and The Atlantic Online, among other publications. In 2006, she earned a nine-month postgraduate writing fellowship from Image magazine, an award given annually to a writer of Christian commitment who is working on a first book.

When she isn’t writing, she and her husband can be found chasing after their three children and finding the humor in things.

2017 Giving Tuesday: 606 Gifts Total

Last Tuesday, the Office of Development launched the University’s second Giving Tuesday campaign. 405 gifts were given in just 24 hours and $115,095 was raised to support a variety of scholarships, programs, and areas of campus. This tremendous show of support marks the largest number of gifts made in one day in University history.

In honor of Giving Tuesday, three families challenged the UP community to secure 350 gifts. By meeting and exceeding that goal, the University’s supporters unlocked $40,000 in scholarship support from the families. Giving Tuesday attracted 188 first-time donors, and a special challenge by Regent Jack Block secured an additional 201 young alumni gifts through student calling in the Telephone Outreach Program. This special challenge brings the total number of Giving Tuesday gifts to 606.

More than 500 students took part in learning “UP Philanthropy Facts” at stations led by the Senior Class Campaign Committee and getting a free hot chocolate with a Wally coffee sleeve. The Office of Marketing created a fun social media contest resulting in 33 entries and student directed $250 contributions to Women’s Ultimate Frisbee and the Moreau Center.

Along with the impressive results, the collective giving of 173 parents, 387 alumni, 24 students and friends, and 53 faculty and staff is a testament to the heart of our community – a community that is eager to come together and make a difference in the lives of University of Portland students.

Columbia Sportswear Employee Store Offer: Nov. 3-26

All University employees are invited to shop at the Columbia Sportswear Employee Store from November 3 to November 26. Each employee can bring four guests to shop and can use the invitation multiple times during the date range listed above. The invitation can be found at this link.

The store features employee pricing, and discounts can vary. Items include all brands in the Columbia Sportswear family, such as Columbia Sportswear, SOREL, Mountain Hardwear, and prAna. Bring the invitation with you to the store reception desk, or show to the receptionist on your mobile phone. UP employee ID is required as well. The invitation is non-transferable, but UP employees can bring up to four family and friends per visit. Online access is not available, but there is no limit to the number of times UP employee may visit the store.

The store is located at 14100 NW Science Park Drive, Portland OR 97229, phone number 503.985.4125, and store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Holiday hours start on November 6 and are listed on the invitation.

Gerry Olinger, C.S.C., university relations. Each employee can bring four guests with them to shop and use the invitation multiple times during that date range. Memorial Mass for Robert W. Franz, Sept. 6

bob-franz-150A memorial Mass for the late Robert W. Franz will take place on Tuesday, September 6, at 1:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Franz, a member of the Board of Regents and a generous supporter of the University, died on August 9, 2016. He will be forever remembered as an astute and successful businessman who generously gave his time and talents to the community he loved. Born in Portland in 1924, Bob was a long-time resident of Vancouver, Washington. He is survived by his sister, Elsie Franz Finley, and preceded in death by his parents Joseph Franz and Elizabeth Streib Franz.

Don Galarneau, 1924-2016

don-galarneauDon Galarneau ’49, a longtime benefactor and supporter of the University’s mission, passed away on Saturday, August 20. Galarneau graduated from UP with a degree in general science/physics and worked as a field engineer internationally for GE for many years. He gave over $1.5 million dollars over his lifetime (including matching gifts from GE) and was one of UP’s most ardent supporters.

Galarneau was especially generous when it came to supporting the Shiley School of Engineering. He established the Donald T. Galarneau Endowed Scholarship for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, and math majors in 2002; since that time, there have been 25 recipients who have been awarded the scholarship, totaling $56,530.

In addition to the scholarship fund, he made gifts to the Engineering Building Fund for renovation of the Engineering Building; the Galarneau Engineering Student Project Fund; Murdock Challenge Engineering Match Fund; Clark Family Library Renovation Fund (Don funded two study rooms in the library which bear his name); the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering Fund; SAE Society/Galarneau Mini Baja Project Fund/Formula Team; the Science and Engineering Equipment Fund  (Don funded the purchase of a 3D printer in addition to other equipment); Portland Magazine, the School of Engineering general fund; Rev. David T. Tyson, C.S.C. Distinguished Professorships; the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, and more.

Businessman, Philanthropist, Regent Earle M. Chiles, 1933-2016

earlechiles copyPortland businessman and philanthropist Earle M. Chiles passed away on Thursday, June 23, after a long illness. Chiles was a longtime supporter of the University of Portland and had been a member of the University’s Board of Regents since 1975.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 1, at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1716 NW Davis St. in Portland, with University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., presiding. A luncheon for family and friends will be held afterwards at the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on campus.

Chiles received his undergraduate degree from Menlo College and held a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University. As president of the Chiles Foundation, he assisted thousands of Oregonians through grants to non-profit organizations and transformed lives through gifts to higher education and medical research. He was the chief executive officer of Chiles and Affiliated Companies and served on the board of directors of Fred Meyer, Inc. His father, Earle A. Chiles, was the stepson of local supermarket pioneer, Fred Meyer.

Chiles and his late parents had a longtime relationship with the University. Spanning over 40 years, Earle Chiles and the Chiles Foundation generously contributed over $10 million to the University. Most significantly, the Chiles Foundation provided the lead gift to construct the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center, which was dedicated in 1984. The center ushered in a new era for the University, and it quickly became a cultural and athletic center not only for the campus but the region.

He was also a major supporter of Pilot Athletics, with the Chiles Foundation providing funding for its programs and student-athletes. In 1994, Earle was named to the Pilots Hall of Fame for his decades of support. More recently, in 2011 the Chiles Foundation gave $2 million to support the expansion of the Chiles Center and the renovation of its locker facilities. In addition to athletics, the Chiles Foundation generously contributed to the Rev. Chester “Pru” Prusynski Endowed Scholarship in Accounting to honor Earle’s longtime friendship with the priest. He also was the benefactor of one of the 14 bells that ring out from the iconic Bell Tower and for many years he provided support for the ongoing floral arrangements in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher.

Chiles was a trustee emeriti and overseer of Boston University and overseer emeriti of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; a lifetime member of the board of the Oregon Symphony Association; and a life trustee of the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon. He was a board member of Providence Portland Medical Foundation; on the advisory board of Providence Heart and Vascular Institute; an honorary member of the advisory board of the Institute of International Education in San Francisco; a past advisory board member of the Graduate Schools of Business at Stanford University and Harvard University; and a past board member of Menlo College.

In 1987, the University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Boston University; an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Menlo College; a Presidential Medal from University of Oregon; the Aubrey R. Watzek Award from Lewis and Clark College; and the Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy from Portland State University. He was a Senator of the Board at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, and was awarded the Silver Cross of Honor from the German Armed Forces.
