2017 Zahm Lecture in American Catholic Education, Sept. 6

September 1, 2017

The 2017 Zahm Lecture in American Catholic Education will take place on Wednesday, September 6, at 7:15 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Christine Firer Hinze, PhD, Professor of Christian Ethics at Fordham University, will present “Against the Grain: Could Zeal for Solidarity be UP’s Gift for our Fractious Time?” The Zahm Lecture is free and open to all.

Drawing from the Holy Cross legacy in dialogue with modern Catholic social thought, Firer Hinze proposes that zeal for solidarity may offer a frame for education in faith sorely needed in today’s world. Firer Hinze is Director of the Curran Center for American Catholic Studies at Fordham University. Her teaching and research focus on foundational and applied ethical issues, with special emphasis on the dynamics of social transformation, Catholic social thought, and economic and work justice for women, families, and vulnerable groups. Her recent publications include Glass Ceilings and Dirt Floors: Women, Work, & the Global Economy (2015), and essays in Theological Studies, Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, Proceedings of the Catholic Theological Association of America, and The Journal of Catholic Social Thought.

The Zahm Lecture in American Catholic Education was established in 1999 to honor Rev. John Zahm, C.S.C., an eminent Holy Cross priest and scientist of the late 19th and early 20th century. Zahm, superior of the Holy Cross in America when the University was founded in 1901, contributed counsel, money, and Holy Cross men to the nascent University. The Zahm lecture honors both his memory and the legacy of Holy Cross priests and brothers on The Bluff by addressing important issues surrounding American Catholic education.

For more information or ADA accommodations, contact Sarah Nuxoll, Garaventa Center, at 7702 or garaventa@up.edu, or visit the Zahm Lecture website here.

Undergraduate Research Protocol

August 18, 2017

The Provost’s office would like to remind all faculty members conducting collaborative research with undergraduates fall semester that the Deans Council approved a uniform, University-wide protocol for all undergraduate research projects. A list of the items required each semester as part of the protocol can always be found in the Undergraduate Research section of the PilotsUP Forms page. The same information is listed below. Any student receiving a stipend or credit for an undergraduate research project at UP is expected to complete the protocol, and faculty members are responsible for informing students of this expectation.

Undergraduate Research Protocol

Learning Agreement – This form is completed by both the faculty member and student. The faculty member must complete their portion of this online form first.

Responsible Conduct in Research Training – New users will need to create a CITI account and affiliate with University of Portland during the registration process to access the course. After creating an account the user must select the appropriate Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR) course from the UP course selection menu. Both faculty members and students must complete CITI’s RCR course, if they have not done so at a previous time.

Pre-Experience Survey for Students– To be completed by the student during the first week of the project each semester.

Post-Experience Survey for Students – To be completed by the student during the last week of the project each semester.

Post-Experience Evaluation – To be completed by the faculty member at the conclusion of the project each semester.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact John Orr (orr@up.edu) in the Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement.

Scheduling Library and Digital Lab Sessions

August 17, 2017

As the semester approaches, now is a great time to schedule sessions before the calendar fills up. The Clark Library offers instruction in two areas: information literacy and multimedia skills. For information literacy, Librarians collaborate with faculty to tailor sessions to students’ research needs. The Digital Initiatives Coordinator provides assistance with creating assignments and instructs classes that have multimedia projects such as creating videos, digital posters, digital photography, and websites.

To request a session for your class, please email preferred dates and times, along with course number to Stephanie Michel, michel@up.edu, for information literacy and Jose Velazco, velazco@up.edu, for multimedia skills.
