Thank You Bill Reed!!

May 18, 2018

We are proud of our graduates and enriched as a family with every commencement weekend, and would like to remind everyone that the bows and ribbons, programs and schedules,  the details both large and small for the big show, are expertly managed by the UP events staff, who work behind the scenes to insure a successful and memorable University of Portland commencement weekend.  This year marks Bill Reed’s 28th and final commencement (29th counting his own graduation 1972). Bill is retiring this summer as director of university events, hard as that is to believe. The University Museum and Archives gives thanks and appreciation to Bill in the latest post on the Museum and Archives blog.

As a complement to the blog entry, the Museum also has a photograph and article display about Bill in the display case on the first floor of Buckley Center near the studies abroad office. Contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at x8038 or piatz@up.edu for more information.

University Graduates Largest Class in its History

May 4, 2018

The University of Portland celebrated its Commencement on Sunday, May 6 with nearly 1,200 graduates projected to earn degrees, making the Class of 2018 the largest graduating class in the University’s history.  University President Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C. conferred an anticipated 860 bachelor’s degrees and 116 master’s degrees during two commencement programs.

To accommodate the increasing number of graduates and their family members, the University held two ceremonies this year: Commencement I included graduates of the College of Arts and Science and School of Education; Commencement II included graduates of the Pamplin School of Business, Shiley School of Engineering, and School of Nursing.

Jessica Jackley, an entrepreneur focused on financial inclusion, the sharing economy, and social justice who is best known as a cofounder of Kiva, was the speaker at the first Commencement ceremony. Hannah Storm, an award-winning journalist, producer, and director, and a pioneer in the field of sports broadcasting for women, addressed the graduates and their guests at the second ceremony. Both women were among the recipients of honorary doctorates from the University.

Clark Library Ethics Project

May 4, 2018

This year, the Clark Library undertook an ambitious initiative to examine our professional ethics as a team, funded by a grant from the Dundon-Berchtold Institute. Ethics is at the core what we do in providing information without bias, maintaining user privacy, and in helping students and faculty use information in ways that consider the source and author rights. The results of our efforts include an ethics statement for the Clark Library that captures the principles we uphold in our work and an optional statement for course syllabi addressing ethical use of information.

For more information contact the library at x7111 or library@up.edu.
